  1. I know this topic has been covered before but, having looked, the posts don't help me with my two questions below. I have been a proud owner of a Bailey Senator Arizona single axle for 20 years - great van; shame about the tyres. I have lost count on the number that have failed whilst towing despite meticulous storage, pressure maintenance, loading, towing etc etc. The good news is that the stability of the outfit is superb; the first I knew of the last blowout at 60 mph on the Plymouth bypass was when someone flashed me and I saw smoke in the wing mirrors. However, I have done some research and have come up with a possible solution. I am running on the original spec 185R 13C and I've found the availability of these is getting a bit tricky. Also, the best I can find have a load rating of 100 so maxing out at 800 kg. The max permis. weight of the laden van is 1456 kg so 728 kg per tyre. Allowing for loading to 90% of max means that the tyres should only carry 720 kg. So it's all a bit tight! My idea is to convert to 14 rims and keep the overall diameter of the wheel/tyre the same. The current dia of the set up is 626 mm but going for 14" rims with 185 75 R14 gives a diameter of 633 mm. The change in profile down from 80 to 75 shouldn't be a problem. Thus the radius is only increased by 3.5 mm and the wheel box will allow for that easily. Something like Firestone Van Hawk 2 are rated at 850 kg so I get a bit of daylight between actual and maximum load per tyre. The questions - 1. Current rims are 5J whilst most 14" caravan alloy come at 5.5J. I am thinking that the difference is minimal. The offset will be practically the same and again existing clearance looks like it can accommodate the minimal increase in tyre width. It might even very slightly reduce the diameter which would not be a problem. 2. There are plenty of 14" caravan alloys available but not many by Bailey. I am guessing that that's not really important; it's the size that matter. Have I missed anything here. Sorry that my first post is so long but hopefully there's someone out there who can give me some good advice.
  2. Why do caravan wheels come lose or sometimes fall off? Is it because they are made of poorer materials and tolerance than car wheels? Or is it because they don't have the central mounting boss that car wheels have? Maybe there's other reasons but I never check the torque on my car wheels but do so before every time the van is pulled out on the road. I'm amazed at the time it takes newly fitted wheels, whether just removed and replaced or on a new van, to settle down and remain at the set torque.
  3. Hello all, I'm new to the forum and new to caravanning. We have just purchased a Bailey Senator Camargue, a 1998 model for myself and my young family. I don't plan to tour with it too much and we have a seasonal pitch already booked. We haven't collected the caravan as of yet. The caravan didn't come with anything, no water bottles, water pump, battery, etc. There's a couple of points I could really use some help with, they are; Spare Wheel - Can anyone tell me what the stud pattern is? Is there a specific wheel I need to buy? Water pump/water inlet - Do I need to buy a specific one for the caravan? I think it has a built in water filter so does this make a difference? Is there anything else specific to the caravan I need to buy before I collect it? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Please be gentle, I am a novice so knowledge is very limited. Thanks in advance, Matt
  4. Is it worth getting caravan wheels balanced. A lot of people seem to say it's unneccesary on a caravan, but is this just because there's no obvious benefit unlike balanced wheels on a car which avoids the shoogle at the steering wheel. I would have thought that it may reduce the strain on components. What do others think.
  5. Just had the wheels balanced and WHL bolts fitted to new van. Fitter recommended I fit spiggot rings for 2 reasons. They are available in a variety of ID and OD sizes and are not expensive. http://www. ebay. co. uk/sch/i. html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2047675. m570. l1313. TR1. TRC0. A0. H0. Xspiggot+ring. TRS0&_nkw=spiggot+ring&ghostText=&_sacat=0 His reasons are: 1. To centralise wheel on hub so it runs true. 2. To help line up bolt holes. Personally I do not agree with 1, the bolts should do that. I agree with 2 though and could be used in conjunction with an alignment tool. http://www. autoinparts. com/Wheel_nuts,_bolts,_locks,_spacers_and_accessories-Quick_Align_Wheel_Tool/c628_962/index. html Any thoughts? Has anyone done it, does anyone know the sizes for Lunar? John
  6. Just bought a Lunar Clubman and will take delivery in February. After my experiences with wheel detachment and my desire that this does not happen again, see here ( http://www. caravantalk. co. uk/community/topic/96160-wheel-detachment/ ). I wondered how Lunar caravans are in this respect, considering that essentially they are similar to my Bailey in respect of having an ALKO chassis and running gear. Do new Lunars come with WSL bolts or would I be wise to buy a set? John Edit, just sent this to Lunar. I am hopefully in the process of purchasing a new (2015) Clubman but have a concern after having a wheel detachment on my Bailey earlier this year. My Bailey was fully serviced and had the correct bolts fitted which were regularly torque checked. Can you assure me of the security of Lunar caravans? What precautions do Lunar take? Should I purchase WSL bolts? will this affect the guarantee?
  7. Hi All I am new to the caravan world and have just purchased a Lunar Solar Highstyle. It came with lots of info but the manual had the relevant pages about the wheel and correct tyre sizes missing - can anyone help? I also have a Sunnflair Majestic Awning Lux 750 which I have no instructions for or idea how to even start to put up. Any advice welcome.
  8. Hi, can someone help me? I own a 1995 Swift Accord 490 that I need to replace the wheels and whilst I know that the wheels are 13 inch 4 stud and the tyres are 175R13, I do not know the stud PCD. Can someone provide me specific details? Regards Paul
  9. my caravan has steel wheels but i'de love to get a pair of alloys for it as most vans i see have them and look nice. ...but must the wheels be the right type for the caravan for it to be safe or will most type's be ok as long as it's the right size ? i do know the nuts are not the same type. ....
