  1. Following a 3 yr relationship with my pride and joy Landrover Discovery which ended with a seized engine (replaced under warranty).... I’ve just arranged the purchase of a 2016 VW Touareg R Line as a replacement towcar for my Buccaneers Caravel 2015 (1974kgs laden). Has anyone had experience if this combo? The discovery had air suspension which meant the outfit ran very level on the road however the Touareg has normal springs etc. Any issues with towball height or nose weight??? The Touareg will take 140 kgs on the towbar. Any advice appreciated. Thanks in advance.. Bart
  2. I was over the moon with the results of the S-Max economy remap so it was inevitable to get my next car done as well. I don't want to sound like an advert for Autotech ltd, I guess any place that does remaps would give you a similar result. I would however choose a company that has a dyno to give you the before and after output. I wouldn't trust figures for some 'test' car, I want to see what's going on under my own bonnet thanks. The price was £350 inc VAT. It's too early to comment on the mpg post-remap. Before the remap I had 42. 5 mpg to Newcastle over 150 miles with the cruise control set at 70 mph. On the way back I tried harder limiting it to 55 mph which was near the minimum speed I could get in 8th, and I averaged 46. 1 mpg. My wife went to Leeds and averaged 38. 7 round trip, mostly motorway with some town. Around town locally the mpg was in the high 20's. These figures were from the computer I didn't do any brim to brim checks before the remap but I will certainly do so now. The car is still on fuel inefficient Dunlop winter tyres because my Avons have not yet arrived and I discovered the pressures were low at 34 psi where they should be 38 to 44 front and 38 to 49 rear. I was disappointed to find on the pre-map figures (in green) the max HP was some 25bhp down on what the car should have been putting out. Now it is back to where it should be at 243bhp therefore I don't feel the need to declare that any performance mod has been done to my insurer. The car is a 2012 model with just over 71K miles. Virtually all Q7's have auto transmission. I believe the economy value in this remap may be in the torque figures. At low revs these engines are putting out less than a stock 2. 0 Ford S-Max whereas afterward there is a boost from 145ft/lbs@2000 rpm to 220 ft/lbs and peak torque has been lowered 200 rpm to 2400 rpm making it more useable and meaning the right foot doesn't have to go down as far to maintain a chosen speed.
  3. As I said in a previous post I have been looking at VW Touareg's and I picked up my beast on Friday gone. Touareg 3,0 TDI R-line with fold away factory tow bar, memory front seats for driver and passenger and air suspension. The latter is nifty to lower the car well below operating height and reverse under the caravan with the reversing camera and then to raise the car to it's full 300mm ground clearance off-road height to hook the van up! Pure theatre but I love it! Fuel consumption will be a bit more than I'm used to with the Yeti but then I don't drive much or use it to commute living in London as I do. So driving to the supplying dealer in Blackburn from London, the Yeti gave me 49,0 mpg. The Touareg coming down the same A1 gave me 36,2 mpg. But I was going a fair clip faster than with the Yeti. It's an awesome car. Understated yet classy and going up I counted Yetis, Touaregs and Discoveries (3 and 4). I thought the Yeti was scarce but I counted 39 Yetis, 14 Touaregs and 49 Discos. So now I have an even scarcer car than what the Yeti was! A car I will miss dearly. But the sheer quality of the Touareg is amazing. And the power from 262 hp with a good six cylinder roar is awesome. That roar is the main reason I discounted a new Skoda Kodiaq or any form of micro-engined Volvo. I went to tow my classic old Lunar around the block to see how it goes and as expected the caravan is not level. At least it is not as ridiculously angled as it was on my Yeti. The standard Yeti removable factory tow bar is silly high. I replaced the hook with that from a Tiguan and that sits much lower and my Lunar towed level. I can't change the tow bar so easy on the Touareg though since it folds out with a button in the boot. It's a small worry since next on the list is a new caravan as I said before. So I'm not too worried about the angle. The Touareg is VERY wide. So wide you see past the caravan without towing mirrors. I fitted them anyway for an even better view. And on my street when parked normal to the kerb the wheels overhang the line on the other side! The Yeti hardly knew the Lunar was there with a mere 140 horses. So the 262 in the Touareg really makes a mere ton of caravan appear like nothing. I look forward to many happy towing miles with it.

    Towing With Auto

Looking at changing the tow car. Looking at the Touareg, around 2006, 2. 5tdi seems popular as does auto. Was wondering what these are like towing, and being auto. Is there that much actual different between auto and manual, ie pulling power, drivability, fuel consumption etc. How does the auto cope with hills say, does it find a great and stick like you do in manual or is it changing up and down all time. Also looking at the Sorento, I know the love for them on here, what are these like in auto, compared? Thanks
  5. Hi all, Well we've been cavavaning now for about 14 months, using my beloved Kia Sorrento kx3 auto 2013 model and I love it. ...thing is wife says it's not doing her street cred any good and wants to change to ( admittedly) a better looking vw touareg. ...I driven one of the same year and its auto. ..I now it's better from a weight prospective. ..but I'm I doing the right thing. ..the Kia has so many toys on it, but tows our van at 86% the touareg will be at 75%......... Mmmmmmmm. ....... Any help please. ... Ta Tim

    V W Touareg

Hi all, Reluctantly changed the Sorento for a 2013 vw Touareg V6 3. 0 altitude. There seems to be a suggestion that I need to upgrade the cooling fans to be able to tow with it. Has anyone towed with one and NOT upgraded the fans, seems a bit 1990's to have have to upgrade cooling fans, anyone had any issues when they haven't changed them. ..? Thanks Tim
  7. I know the reviews have been good for the Touareg as a towcar, but wanted to know if it was really that good. Also, LogicLee, is the gearbox on the car any good (any issues with it?). Conscious that its a 7 speed DSG Reason for asking is that I am sorely tempted by one. It has a factory fitted towbar, so that covers off the fan upgrade etc. The towbar operation is fantastic & the dealer sent me this little video of its operation that you may like: http://video. citnow. com/vsgcLZ6CWd8 Full 13 pin electrics included & looks like there is enough space for the alko hitch, but would appreciate people's opinion before I potentially take a leap into the unknown Milky NB: Yes, I believe I'm having my midlife crisis now!
  8. Well, our wait is almost over - we pick up an Elegance 570 on 10th June and, if all goes to plan, four days later we depart on the Camping and Caravanning Club tour of Iceland and the Faroes. We reckon that a month in the 'van, travelling around the perimeter of Iceland, some of it on non-metalled roads, should be a pretty good test. We'll be towing it with our VW Touareg and we're interested in how it tows (we're used to a twin-axle Searcher), what it's like to live in and how it stands up to the punishment of what might well be a challenging trip. Fingers crossed. If you're interested in following us - and seeing some images and comments about the van and country, here's the blog: http://icelandbycaravan. blogspot. com I'll re-post when we return(!?) in July G
