  1. We have decided to go down to Spain for January and February. Has anyone any recommendations for long stay sites South of Valencia, preferably ASCI. Also any recommendation for the best route from Brittany, say, Roscoff? Thanks in advance.
  2. Hi, I've heard that's its possible to site a touring caravan in france/spain. I am thinking of this. we have 2 small dogs. we enjoy walking mainly also mountain and road biking. I am wondering what the options are that many of you may have experience of..... locations, price, towing the van, travel time, do you fly there or drive. any advice would be great . regards rob
  3. We are off to Northern Spain next year and looking for caravan sites. Can you recommend any in the Santander and Galicia regions please.
  4. Does anyone have experience of vets in Burgos Spain. We are staying at Fuentes Blancas on our way home and need to get the dog checked. Ian
  5. Hello We are going to Spain for the first time with our caravan. I'm not sure what to do about the fridge on the ferry as it takes more than 24 hours?? Any advice or tips would be much appreciated, what do other people with more experience do?? Many Thanks.
  6. Well here we are into our 4th week in Spain & hardly a problem in sight. The Ultima is performing (almost) faultlessly. The only problem encountered so far is with the bathroom pull switch which seems to have disintegrated. I am aiming to dismantle it tomorrow to see if it is repairable, but if not i'll get it changed when I return in late June. The caravan is attracting a lot of favourable interest with many admirers of the new front design. After our travels last year with our 2 berth Coachman Pastiche we are very impressed with the double bed in the Lunar, its very comfortable & surprisingly easy to make. The van tows very well & so far after about 900 miles we are averaging 30. 6 mpg, thats mainly towing, with perhaps 50 or so solo miles. I set my trip to zero on a full tank when leaving home & will keep an eye on the average & let you all know the final figure when I return. cheers Steve
  7. Ferry crosssing fantastic, Brittany ferries, short comfortable journey our dog Summer was priority for choosing this short crossing. Summer is very spoilt and also elderly at 13, but she certainly doesnt look it or act like it, even so the thought of putting her in a kennel/cage was not going to happen on other routes. The Cherbourg route was ideal so she stayed very happily in our car in her bed, happy dog therefore happy us. No problems with checking her in, this is our first time towing abroad and Summers first abroad adventure so we needed to plan it as stressfree as possible. The towing experience was fine, I was map reader with the help of Miss Sat nav (Ummm??) and we managed to get to our first stop a campsite Mont St Michel - having ventured through the tinest villages around to get there. We have an 8 metre caravan and a 5 metre car - Swift Conqueror 645 and Nissam pathfinder. This site was excellent - do remember that a lot of sites you have to pay for water, here it was 3 euros for 10 minutes of water we only used 2 minutes - but had no change so had to go off looking for change as reception was closed and after a long day and journey it wasnt ideal - a lesson learnt for next time! Many sites we have found were not open at this time of year (Dec 28th) and also many unsuitable for twin axle caravans. Coming of the motorway and hunting these sites down which we could find, was going to be very stressful, so we decided the only solution was the motorway aires. Also a warning about unmanned french petrol stations - Dont use them, they take 100 euros from your bank even if you only put in 50 euros, a few days later they take the 50 euros but hold onto your 100 euros for 2 weeks!!! This is apperently normal on debit cards so do beware of this - Spain is fine operates as in the UK - I had not read this on any foums anywhere - we thought we had been victims of fraud. This as I metioned is our first time towing abroad, Id read the forums the warnings and picked up tips on parking in the Aires. .. so we took a chance we had no other choice, they were ideal for us, you just pull in, park up then straight off again in the morning. We found that the 2 we parked in one being in France near Bordeaux and the other near Zaragoza, were absolutly fantastic and it is such a shame theres so much bad things experianced in these aires. We parked at the end of a lay by pull in, as advised no one can then block you in and rob you we parked close to lorries and other fellow campers. I also kept a light on all night so it was visable just slightly through the caravan blinds. It was all very quiet, not much noise, but it was New years eve maybe everyone was where they wanted to be. Will we do it again? - yes we will on the journey home. We arrived at Bennicasm around 4pm - first experience of a Spanish campsite. ... oh lordy. .. large twin axle caravan with no motor mover. ...um we will save that one for the next blog. ...till next time x Photos below Summer at the first campsite in France,
  8. So here we are. .. The first episode. ..the crossing Poole to Cherbourg. .. . number 1. ..always check when boon docking (no electric hook up) that your leisure battery works. ..ours didnt. ..thankyou to all all who got me candles for Christmas. . No 2. ..parking up noone for miles around to find someone park 3 inches away from you . ..do not pull the window blind up in anger and rip it off "just to have a look" . No 3. .emptying all your entire water out of the internal tanks under the van to create a flood then to realise the dogs water bowl is empty. No 4. .Dont rely on your mobile phone to be an alarm clock for an early start the battery goes flat . .espcially when your parked at the very front of the check in lane with a ferry load of cars waiting to board. You tube vloggers, bloggers or carry on camping?? But hey were on our holibobs. ..who cares . .join us in the next blog as we attempt to find our first campsite with the help (or not) of the new sat nav, who loves taking us through narrow french villages Im sure I heard the sat nav laughing afterwards!! . .Hi de hi campers xx
  9. We have booked two rallies in Spain during January to March next year and wondered if anyone who has done the same had any tips. We are experienced ralliers, all year round, and have done a lot of foreign touring but not in the winter. Ian
  10. In this blog I am going to try and tell you the story of my wife's (MrsT) and my trip of a lifetime. There will be links to our blog, where you can read many of the stories I'll be posting on here and others, which I will be missing out, Before this trip started, we had had 20 years of taking the kids to France for the usual 2-4 week summer holiday. To begin with with tents and Eurocamp, then with a Lunar Clubman (the one with a boat roof) until we reached the point where we had a brand new 2010 Bailey Pegasus 554 waiting to show us how she would cope. We did a short trip to settle our nerves then. . . we took the plunge. Follow the full blog at www. thomsonstravels. co. uk _________________________________________________ After a few short months of indecision, the house went on to the market and within 2 days a buyer found. 3 weeks later, we were living on our drive waiting for the money to be paid in to our bank account, and finally, a very short 5 weeks from start to finish, we were on our way around the UK visiting friends and relations as we prepared ourselves for a trip of a life time. As we haled from Poole in Dorset, it seemed silly not to wave farewell to the UK from our old favourite cross channel port. In doing so managed, for the first time in 16 years of caravanning summer holidays in France, to become violently sea sick! Ah well, a lesson hard to forget! We arrived in France at a goodly time and drove to our first of many campsites, in Coutance on the 7th November 2014. The campsite, unbooked as most of our campsites have been, was easy walking distance from the town and, like many municipal sites in France, close to the town's football and sports facilities. After a much needed bottle of wine and a good nights sleep, we were ready to explore.
  11. Just an update from SIL living quite near Almeria in South Eastern Spain. With the loss of the FTA channels like BBC, ITV etc, he had (a year ago) manufactured a GRP 1. 9 m petal type dish. It did not make much difference but today he bought and fitted a 1. 8m thick famaval dish. Now he gets all the Sky channels that he would get in the UK. For caravanners, this is of no help because the dish is big, heavy and set in a big concrete foundation. Not exactly portable. Now my grandchildren have got Cbeebies back! Peace!
  12. Hi, we are new to towing and are currently in southern Spain looking to go from Granada to Valencia. Can anyone tell us if the A92 East of Granada is suitable for towing, as it looks to be very hilly on the map. (Outfit is a Hyundai Santa Fe pulling a Challenger SE580).
  13. For those going to Spain, as from today this is essential reading! http://legal4spain. com/blog/ Phil.
  14. Hi, As I understand it, you become a resident of Spain for tax purposes, if you spend more than 183 days there in a calendar year. It does not matter if those days a non-consecutive. You also don't need to own a property in Spain. As a resident you then have fill in a form to declare all assets overseas worth more than 50,000. If you don't fill in this form fully, they can fine you so heavily that you lose your overseas assets and then some! What they do with this info has not been said, but it's clearly to tax you. We're planning to stay for over the 183 days on a caravan site in Spain, so this worries me, as we have a house in the UK. Has anyone else got any advice. My wife just says ignore it, how could they trace us. Any thought? Thanks Steve
  15. Just bought a 2nd hand Abbey GTS 418 and going to Spain on Monday. Any tips for cheap 1 night stopovers in France, preferably along the west coast would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Rom
  16. Hello from (presently!) sunny Shropshire. Well after 25 years since last owning a touring caravan (a Swift Major RL) and with retirement a reality we finally took the plunge and purchased a nice, shiny, new Bailey Pegasus GT65 Verona along with the (seemingly endless) host of Wastemaster, Aqua Roll (I'm sure I only got rid of our old one a year or so back!) awning, groundsheet, et al and are due to take our first outing in the coming week. Wow but how vans have changed in those ensuing year! We loved our family outings in the old Sprite, which I'd fitted mains wiring, separate battery, gas bottle box etc. .. to over the years - but these new vans are truly a 'home from home' these days. Anyhow, plan to take it over to France in November and visit relatives in central France before pushing on into Spain with the view of traveling around the Andalusia region over the period November-March/April period. I'd be delighted if anyone can throw me a few hints/tips/pointers about what I should and shouldn't do regarding such a trip. It really is great getting back into a pastime that both of us enjoyed so much - look forward to meeting up with some of you en-route sometime. All the best - Eric and Elaine
  17. Hi there, Just bought a new Bailey Pegasus GT65 Verona and after taking it down to Penzance the past two (fabulous!) weeks, we're now beginning to plan for a trip to Southern Spain in order to get away from the cold/wet/dark UK winter. We're towing with a 2010 SEAT Exeo ST 143 Estate and plan on visiting family near Poitiers France before heading toward Barcelona and then on down south. Would welcome any suggestions/advice that any members with experience in this area can offer. A few immediate questions. .. Chunnel or ferry? Can't find any ferry schedules (Plymouth/Portsmouth to St Malo/Cherbourg?) at present Travel alone or try to hook up with aothers travelling same direction? As this will be our first time, looking for sites where other English speaking folk (we're 62 and 65) of simillar age group will be Not too bothered about large holiday camp style places, but do want to be not too far from town/village with restaurants/entertainment Have propane tank, should I get Camping Gaz as well? Have noted two warning triangles, fluoro jacket, spare set of specs, headlight deflectors, ASIC card, spare bulbs - anything else? After 25 years away from caravanning, it's really great to be back! Eric and Elaine
  18. I have just returned from touring in France. Though I carry 2 gas bottles, I was very anxious that my second bottle would not last the whole trip -- thankfully it did, just. I am planning other trips to France, Spain and maybe Greece. I noticed in France about 6 different types of gas bottle. I would like advice on the best strategy for using gas in Europe.
  19. We are off to France in October with the intention of driving down into Spain. Our insurance covers us until February and wondered if anyone has any information on sites in France and/or Spain that are open all year. Also, any tips, advice or experience of an extended winter trip to these countries would be appreciated.
  20. Hello, we are new to caravanning and are starting to look at the equipment needed to allow us to view UK free to view channels when we are in the south of Spain for a month next winter. Could anyone who has done this tell me what size dish we will need and other information that will be of use? We would prefer to have a free standing dish, not one fitted to the roof. Thanks
  21. We've been taking family holidays in France with the caravan on tow, for the past 6 years. We now fancy going further south and are thinking about taking the Brittany ferry from Portsmouth to Bilbao. The plan would then be to drive the 380 miles accross to the Med to somewhere near Barcelona. Has anybody had any experience of doing something similar ? Are the roads/motorways in Spain on a par with the excellent French ones ? The 24hr return ferry cost for 4, plus car & caravan, works out at about £1400 ! Which to me seems quite expensive, although I know you need to offset that against the reduced driving cost/time. Any advice gratefully received
