  1. I have just purchased a Coachman Mirage 440/5 where the previous owner cut the cables in the Battery storage box. Need help to find diagrams/instuctions etc to know how to connect mains and the battery. Hope someone out there can point me in the right direction.
  2. I bought my new Avante in March last year, would anybody know if I have to take it to the dealer I purchased it from for its first service? I am considering taking it to another service centre which is closer to my home. They are an approved service centre for Elddis but I don't want to invalidate my 3 year warranty if the rule is to take it back to the dealer I purchase it from for servicing. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
  3. Hi, I have been trying to find the size of the "one shot nut" for a Bailey Ranger 510/4 Caravan. I have a part number from Bailey 1140206. They don't have stock and they do not tell you the size! I think it maybe 32mm but need to confirm this before looking to buy elsewhere. Thank you.
  4. Newbie, still learning. Is there anywhere that I can check how good/bad/indfiferent my local dealer is please? I can see the review section only lists caravans, sites and towcars. I am wondering whether I should use my local dealer 3 miles away, or whether based on people's past experiences I might want to travel further afield. I know you can't always rely on reviews, as Tripadvisor demonstrates well in my experience, but there might be some useful pointers. Secondly how does this relate to buying at the NEC show? Do I negotiate the best deal with whichever dealer can provide it then travel to pick up the van before letting a more local dealer service it in years to come? Is that how things work? Thanks
  5. Does everyone get there caravan serviced every year? We had a full service this time last year and had a clean bill of health. Gas regulator was new as well as the tyres late 2013. I may be being tight but thought I would save my money this year and put it towards more time away but the other side of me says service and piece of mind. Thanks in advance for your comments and suggestions

Not a fan of main dealer servicing, I think they are an overpriced oil change. Took my Peugeot 4007 to our local main dealer a few weeks ago for its 5th service, I was offered one for £99 and another for much dearer but they could not explain the difference so I chose the cheaper. Why? I wanted the service record kept up to date and they promised to do a fault diagnosis, I wanted this because every so often the car would misfire. They reported that there were no faults and that the car was running well. I checked the oil level after a couple of weeks to find it was very low. I called the dealer who said that it was Peugeot instructions to only fill to 3/4 between low and high. Has anyone else come accross this? Previous services have filled it up to the high mark. A few days later the misfire started again worse than ever. This time the emmisions light came on. Worried about this I phoned the dealer and asked if they checked the fluid and particle filter at the service. They said no which surprised me as I believe it is a very simple but important job. They booked it in to check the fault codes again. In the mean time I had a look at the EGR valve, 10 years ago I would have changed this myself if that was identified as the problem. While I was looking I unplugged and replugged all the electrical connections I could find, injectors, sensors, common rail. The car now runs smoother, a bit more go and so far no misfire, also, the light has gone out, result. The moral of the story, clean connections in order to avoid big repair bills. John

  10. Hi all My 2013 caravan is due its first service and I have already booked it in with my supplying dealer, but after a worrying conversation I am starting to doubt their, up to now, excellent customer care culture. My van is a twin axle and when I enquired about the cost they quoted £265 plus an additional cost for some one use nuts, this sounded excessive so I asked whether a deal could be done, their response was a short "no". Then came the question of the when, on the day of the booking I agreed to drop it off first thing in the morning but to save me having to take time off work I said I would collect it the next morning, I was told that I must collect it the same day between 4 and 5pm, I explained this didn't suit me but again after a discussion there was no bending whatsoever, I then asked for a Saturday booking, "we don't do Saturdays until March as there is no demand, its dead this time of year" was the response, so I asked why there was an issue with leaving it overnight, a couple of points to note is the dealer is not short of space and I agreed to accept any risk and liability overnight, the response was a rather blunt "you can't leave it overnight so are you booking it in or not?" At the time I agreed to take the time off work and confirmed the booking but this has been eating away at me as, although I wouldn't describe the conversation as rude it has certainly left me questioning whether they put the customer first. As a result I have now decided to look into alternative servicing options, so that brings me to my original question: What are the potential pitfalls of using an authorised mobile service agent rather than the supplying dealer? - Has anyone done this and regretted it? - My concern is that there are a couple of threads running at the moment relating to the manufacturer of my caravans lack of customer care, (I have to say that to date I having nothing but praise for them in all of the dealings I have had personally), but could breaking ties with my dealer leave me with a potential nightmare should I have any issues in future? I think it's also worth adding that it's a sorry state of affairs when a consumer has to even consider putting up with poor service in order to make a potential (and when it comes to caravans you could insert probable) future claim on a manufacturer warranty palatable! 13. I had my 2011 Avante 646 serviced at the beginning of the year and couldn't believe it when they found damp in the whole of the kitchen area. After discussions with Elddis they agreed that the work would be covered under the warranty and I duly awaited the parts to be delivered so I could get my caravan in for repair. The repairer has now had the van for nearly 8 weeks and I rang a few days ago to find out if it was ready to be picked up. I was told that they would get back to me, which they didn't so I rang again yesterday to be told that the van doesn't have damp and that they had found a metal sheet running in the whole of the kitchen area which explained the damp reading. Needless to say, I am dubious and have asked for written confirmation from Elddis that this is the case before I do anything else. I am aware that there are metal fixings behind the walls but you test damp in lots of places and if it is showing over a full area (probably 2m x 2m) then surely it wouldn't register as damp everywhere. Has anyone else experienced this before?
  14. We have just had our annual caravan service here in France and the thought crossed my mind that other caravanners living in France and/or Spain or who store their caravans over here, might like an English speaking, well qualified engineer who is also authorised for warranty work. www. EuroCaravanServices. com have serviced our caravan for a few years now and I have no hesitation in recommending them to anyone who has a caravan. They travel to you and Clive does, in my opinion, a very thorough job. Happy travelling, Roger
  16. This posting affects everyone with vans over 5 years old - especially if you have bought a pre-owned van or got a restoration project. My 1990 Coachman appears to have been well-kept. Manuals for the fridge, water heater and caravan heater in a drawer. I imagine that earlier in its life the van has been professionally serviced. I was changing the gas reulator from Blue to Red. Fortunately I got a deal (a new pipe - orange type 2-, pipe clips and a regulator for less than a tenner). I say fortunately because this led to me changing not just the Regulator but also the pipe. When I looked at the date on the old Black type 1 pipe I was shocked. 1991 - it would appear the pipe has not been changed since the van was new. - It is recomended these pipes are changed every 5 years if not sooner. So if you do not know when the pipe was changed take a look. I have had a van in the past where an apparently good pipe was leaking, fortunately my partner Sandra has a keen nose for gas.
  17. What are the main credentials of a caravan dealer for you? Service centre? Long established business with a wealth of industry knowledge? Polite and efficient? Fantastic Aftersales care? Deals & offers? Location? Jot down your top 3 points that matter the most to you!
  18. Just a short note to let other users know that I have had my first service carried out by http://www. caravanservicingandinspection. com/ The guy, Alex jackson, is independent but approved by various bodies including NCC and more importantly Bailey. He turned up when he said he would, did what I consider to be a professional and thorough service and didnt charge nearly as much as main dealers. Did discover that the gas regulator had ceased up over the winter. Annoying on a 1 year old caravan but better to find out now than on the first night of a holiday.

    Truma Heater

Can any CT members advise what the approx costs would be to replace two thermostats on my Truma heater. My Trumatic S3002 would not heat with electrics (was ok on gas) so I took it to my local caravan service people. I have been told they had to take the fire out completely and test the electrics and they found that two thermostats needed replacing. Including the costs of the thermostats (total £16) I have received a bill for over £145 which includes labour, and a gas test. Would anyone agree that £145 is about right?
