  1. Hello everyone, After some serious research we've just bought a caravan! I (Fiona) have been camping in a tent for 20 years, but my husband Trevor doesn't fancy it. .. he's a lot older than me, and I can understand it. We are in Orkney, which narrows down the choice a lot. We looked at a fairly new Bailey, but it was a four berth and too heavy for our car, and quite pricey. This Sterling Eccles Amber (2004) came up for sale 12 miles from us, and so we have bought it. It's very clean inside, has never had pets or smokers in it and they've kept it heated all the time. Everything works. Bad things are that since arriving Orkney (the worse weather in the country) it has been outside, for 12 years, and also has never been serviced since 2005. However, it looks fine, and after the torrential rain we've had there are no leaks, and I can't smell any damp, so cross fingers! If it was going to leak I guess 12 years in Orkney would have caused it to appear by now? I'm ultra excited about this and there is lots to learn. I have NO experience and Trevor has very little! We are getting it serviced ASAP and will be off on little trips close to home to get used to it. ... and then, the summer awaits! Are there any other Orkney members on here? Fiona
  2. We're currently at Port a Bhaigh, Altandhu, with a stunning view, and will welcome advice on the next stage of our trip, please. It's our first caravan expedition, and so far it's wonderful! We're hoping to get to Dunnet Head, by Thurso. The planned next stop meanwhile, is at Scourie. It's a bit over 100 miles between there & Dunnet, but it's on plenty of winding one-track roads. Other than Durness, about 20-something miles from Scourie, there's nowhere showing itself as a good place to stop on the way. So any experienced advice on how long that whole West to East trip takes, and/or on somewhere with EHU to pause on the way, would be very welcome, please. Wifi is limited round here, so I'll try to look in within the next 24 hours, but won't be online much between. Thanks, Richard
  3. Hi All, Im looking for some advice from those who have either travelled to scotland with their caravan and those who have done it also in the winter. Due to some medical issues I've had this year, my touring season is the winter and so far its been quite enjoyable. Ive clocked up 16 nights so far and I'm still not finished for 2016. I had some not so good news that i need to have quite a major operation next year so its my opportunity now to squeeze in an adventure before the van takes a summer break again and i need to go through intensive rehabilitation. Scotland has always been a draw because of its scenery and the fact I'm half scottish and have never been able to make it high up into Scotland. That coupled with the winter-it seems an ideal opportunity to grasp. Ive had quite a bit of experience towing now so long distances don't really bother me. I am thinking of getting to a site and staying there for about 7 days. Fort William interests me for what it has to offer and whats local to it. Maybe two stop overs to get there and also another two for the return trip? My questions are- 1- Do any of you have recommendations for stop over sites which are nice on the way north M6 side of the country. I am really open to where these are, as long as they split the journey quite evenly. 2- How long does it take with a caravan in tow to get from Glasgow to Fort William? 3- What things would i need to possibly consider as extras to going? An insulated aqua roll cover is on the list. I have propane and also have a spare electric heater i keep in the van. I dont have an awning so wouldn't need to consider any winter types for that. 4- I am told not to bother considering fully serviced pitches because of the fact the water lines will freeze and its just not worth it. Is that true, is there a way i can overcome that or should i just accept that as the fact of the matter. 4- The final question really is- Am i being unrealistic to consider this area in February? Sorry- lots of questions but i hope that your responses will help me for some plans i have in future years to do some winter touring abroad hopefully. Looking forward to hearing your responses and thank you for those taking time to reply. Rob

  5. Can anyone recommend a caravan storage place near Melrose in the Scottish Borders? I'd rather not be further than 15- 20 miles from Melrose itself. It would need to be able to provide regular access to the 'van.
  6. Is Carlisle to Brora too much of a slog to do in a day? Its about 7 hours driving plus 2 half hour stops. My wife isn't the best of travellers and we have two dogs. An 8 hour journey doesn't faze me at all (I used to drive a truck for a living) but this is a holiday after all! I drive a 2010 BMW 520d tourer and will have a 2008 Lunar Stellar hung on the back. We regularly drive up the West Coast to Oban, Fort William and Carradale Bay in one go, but this adds a good hour on to the drive time and there are regularly delays on the A9. Views and opinions appreciated. If you have never visited Carradale Bay, here is a link to a You tube video I did for Carradale Bay Caravan site. If you like the soundtrack, please say so - it's my wife singing our own arrangement of wild mountain thyme.
  7. If you are planning to travel to the Mull of Kintyre, Oban or Fort William, I would allow. Plenty of time, and if possible, go via Stirling and Callander. I travelled down from North Ledaig yesterday. I usually go via the A83, but this has been blocked by a 1000 tons of landslide at Rest and be Thankfull. So the dreaded Crianlarich to Tarbet route was taken, but there are major roadworks on that road, (naturally, it's the height of the tourist season) and the queues coming north were about 2 miles long. So, my advice would be the Stirling Callender route, which is no problem for Obam and Fort William, but a killer if you are going down the Mull of Kintyre.
  8. Hi All, I have three children aged 5 and 10 months (twins), I am looking for a site with lots of activities that will keep them entertained for a week or two (or two sites for a week each), any suggestions for the north east of Scotland (within 100 miles of Aberdeen, eldest not the best car traveller at the moment) would be appreciated. Thanks in advance Paul
