  1. Hi All, Don't know if this has been covered elsewhere, but a search didn't turn anything up conclusively. I've recently had a 200w solar system installed and it's all now working tickety boo following on from the installation gremlins. What I'd like to do if it's possible, is to wire in a 2000-3000w inverter into the system so that I can plug something that requires 240v in to any of the plug sockets, rather than having to plug them into the front of the inverter. I'm thinking toaster, kettle, microwave, hairdryer, tv etc - but never more than one thing at once. Is this possible? How would a system like this work should I be on an EHU? So, is this achievable and if so, other than the inverter, what parts do I need and how do I go about wiring it in? Thanks in advance.
  2. Hi I am a complete Newbie looking into caravanning. My starting point is to try and determine how much it will probably be to use a touring caravan site per night. An initial browse on the net seems to indicate the cost will most likely be £25 to £35 per night depending on the season etc. Would this be true? Please , would be very grateful of any advise re costs so I can see if I can afford to take up caravanning or not. It would be a 2 /3 berth rig for two pensioners. wanting to explore UK'
  3. Hi all looking at buying a Bailey Unicorn Barcelona as a first caravan. 2012 model. Is there anything I should look out for or is there a better van for the same or similar money. (£11500)
  4. Hi all My wife is in the doghouse and really needs your help! We've been very happy campers for 15 years while kids were young and really loved it but decided last year was actually going to be the last year and said that this season we would look at caravans instead. Now last week after a brief chat about this season I came home from work and my wife had brought A 1999 Avondale dart 510 5 with "absolutely no damp whatsoever" she said. That's all fine but we've never ever stayed in a tourer before let alone owned one. I got a detachable brink towbar fitted this week and manged to get it home and I'm looking at it now out of my front window. It has been smoked heavily in and it stinks but it's not in too bad shape. I haven't checked electrics, water or gas but I'm a builder so I'm hoping I will get my head around all that with a bit of a look. She's showing me googled pictures of all these old caravans that people have renovated and a its got me excited now so we are starting it today with plans of renewing the kitchen and bathroom, modernising and decorating the rest. My only concern isnt the new Smev appliances she's odering it's all the chair and bed cushions she wants to reuse. My worry is the smell and hygiene ughhh. She said she'd clean and dye them and with a new throw and new cushions will look as good as new but I've got to sleep on them. OK it's getting late now so I'm starting. Thank you all for reading and ANY help or advise, what to do and deffinatly NOT TO DO'S will be EXTREAMLY appreciated. Oh and this site is absolutely awesome. My tea age children have told me off all this week for being on my phone all the time. Ha ha how the tables have turned lol. Thanks all Mark
  5. Hi all sorry if this info is here somewhere, but I couldn’t find it. We are newbies, collecting our first van on Tuesday, a 2006 Lunar Quasar 2 berth. We will be making up the double bed in the dinette, and want to purchase two single duvalay mattress toppers to sit side by side. We are not sure what width to buy. Can anyone tell me what width the made up bed is likely to be once we have pulled out the lats and made up the bed ? Weight limits on paYLoad is an issue for us in our van, but we have decided a good nights sleep is a priority.
  6. Good afternoon One & All, New guy just joined this afternoon and about to invest in a 1998 Globetrotter Jubilee 2 berth. Looks ok to me & have been round it with a damp meter. Any one had one of these previously & any thoughts please? Tow car will be a Skoda Yeti 2 litre diesel. Many thanks, Bantam57
  7. Hi, Just joined reducing myself. Been caravaning for 15 years with a variety of vans. Currently towing a Bailey Unicorn Valencia (2015) with my Hyundai Santa Fe (2016). Disastrous few days caravaning next Minehead this week. Fridge packed in (confirmed cooling unit failure) and seriously bent awning pole and damage to awning as the result of storms today in Bristol Channel. Is fridge failure and awning damage covered by caravan insurance? Left policey docs at home!
  8. Hi all, I am new to this site, not new to caravanning but have finally purchased my first caravan (well we were given it for free). That being said other than knowing it is a Lunar Delta and old we don't know any more. I was wondering if there is anyone that could please help me try and figure out the age and model, hopefully there is a picture below of it. I have a handbook with it but no other history at all and the previous keeper literally knew nothing about it and had it in his barn for 5+ years and never used it. I am thinking it is possibly a Lunar Delta 500-2 or 590-4 but these are pure guesses to be honest. Inside the caravan to the left is a sofa on each side, straight ahead is the kitchen with an "ED TRANSFORMERS 2S4V STYLE FPB TYPE T" transformer/distribution panel. To the right is the bedroom which as you enter there is a bathroom on the left, wardrobe and space to the right and small double bed straight ahead.
  9. We bought our first caravan yesterday after years camping and a couple of motorhome holidays. Looking forward to lots of advice from all you experienced people especially where to site it for the first year. Have a young family so hoping to make some special memories.
  10. Just an hello to all looking to purchase our first van this year/ spring thinking of Coachman Pastiche 545 or alike. Please be kind if the questions I may ask in future seem basic but I'm starting from scratch. I do have a hgv class 1 so towing not new. So for now it's just hi.
  11. Hi Greeting from Wicklow, Ireland. Just got my first caravan and planning a bit of a roadtrip in Aug. Might be asking lots of (dumb) questions Alan M
  12. We're back from our first proper trip, three weeks round a readjusted edited version of the Scotland 500 route, with the Rapido pop-top we bought in November after years in tents. And we're converted! We had a great time, and we're also much more confident about so many aspects of caravanning that seemed a little daunting, or simply way outside our experience, before. We've learned a lot too. The weather was mostly very cold, windy, with lots of rain some of the time, and utterly glorious scenery visible at others, and our little van with its oil-filled heater did a superb job at keeping us well homed all the way round. Given that up until Autumn we had no plans even to buy a caravan, there was a lot to learn, and much of the research was done reading and asking questions here and on the CMC forum. We're truly grateful for all the generous sharing of information and experience which made so much difference to the whole trip, from things like how far to tow in a day to all manner of hints. Thanks to all here. We're already having thoughts about all the other places we'd like to go now, including re-visiting some of those on our way round Scotland - though on a further trip we'd make less moves, and stop at a few places for longer rather than aiming to go right round. Thanks again! Richard
  13. Hello Everybody, we are new to this forum and are in the process of changing from Motorhome to caravan. We have been very fortunate in using a friends Motorhome for the past 3 years as they were abroad but now they wish to sell it. So, we are upgrading our car (Discovery Sport) and will be looking for a 6 berth twin axle caravan in the off season. The forum has loads of good advice and I look forward to the talking to likeminded people.
  14. Well I've arrived at last; trying to find my way around this very comprehensive site. So just want to say hello to all you lovely caravanners. I wonder if there is a badge or sticker to display to other caravanners on a campsite that we live here? Sorry. Only been here five minutes and already off-topic.
  15. Hello all, I'm new to the forum and new to caravanning. We have just purchased a Bailey Senator Camargue, a 1998 model for myself and my young family. I don't plan to tour with it too much and we have a seasonal pitch already booked. We haven't collected the caravan as of yet. Please be gentle, I am a novice so knowledge is very limited. Matt
  16. Hi, We are looking to purchase a secondhand van, having just sold our trailer tent. Can anyone reccommend a van / layout that we could look at? We are a family of 3, DD is nearly 6 and we don't want a massive van, something compact would be DH's preference as he's not keen on towing. Any help - would be appreciated! Thanks, Marie
  17. Hi New to this site. Thinking of changing my 'van. Been reading about the Coachman Laser with fixed bed model number 640/4 I think. Would welcome feedback and comments about this 'van. Also on dealers in the North West of England. I want a 'van that will last me for years. Will probably be the last one I buy. Want quality. Want it to last. Many thanks.
  18. Hi All Just saying Hi. I have just bought an Atlas Concept 2006 any advise on decorationg would be gratefully received. have a great day
  19. Hi I am an utter newby. Several months ago a very close friend died and before she went, she said she wanted me to have her caravan. A 1991 Swift Silhouette 2 berth. She had been gifted it a year before, but had become too ill to work on it herself, so it has stood unused for a year. We have no tow-bar and are about a year off getting a car that could possibly tow it but I have a large drive and a huge back garden and am more interested in using the caravan as a work space for myself in the warmer months, and my hobbies. The person who gave her it had been actively caravanning, travelling around with it only 13 months ago. My friend who towed it here said it towed well. It definitely has damp problems though and I'd rather try and fix it than trash it. I will ask advice elsewhere on the forum but thought I'd say hi here.
  20. Hi all, Just thinking about starting up in the caravan world. Currently have a 2 Ltr petrol Mondeo on a 10 plate with approx 46,000 on the clock. Do quite a lot of mileage for work, approx 400 miles a month. Am considering changing the car anyhow so want to get one that can be a good tow car. Will probably go diesel automatic but not sure whether to go 4x4 or just a strong hatchback or estate. I can see positives In a 4x4 as it would give me more choice in van and would also be good in winter months but can also see fuel economy is often a lot less and things like tyres and exhausts and even brake pads etc are a lot more on 4x4s as I am doing a fair daily mileage. In helping me with advice it is fair to say I will probably look for a mid size 2 or 4 berth van to start off with but also like the look of a twin axle with fixed twin beds long term if I get on with caravaning. I am also confused on how old to go car wise as I used to have a 55 plate focus that was costing a fortune in repairs. I need it reliable for work as my job involves going from site to site on a daily basis. Any advice is welcomed. I am not asking people to make the decision for me but know people will have more experience that I currently do. Makes and models especially welcomed as well as general advice. When driving solo I do like a bit of power under my foot !! Thanks in advance Steven
  21. Hi everyone, I've been a caravanner for around 10 years now, but have become board of my old forum and found myself drifting over here frequently. I'm on my second 'van the first being a 1988 swift cornich bought in 2005 with a small damp problem. Patched her up (frequently I might add!) and had many great trips. My new pride and joy was purchased last year and I love her so much! I have fitted an inverter, solar panel, external mains socket (off a existing plug socket) and resealed a few areas that were a bit iffy. I tow and set up by myself so don't go far, mainly North Lakes and round Dumfrieshire. Really tempted to go to the continent at some point but I don't get much time off work and usually end up going to the med for some guaranteed sun! Cheers, Jen
  22. Hi. Was offered a good price caravan and have bought it even though I don't have a tow car yet. The caravan is a Home - Car Rally 552 and is quite old but for £200, can't grumble. No damp, just needs a good clean. Ok, I have never owned a caravan before and really do not know where to start. 1)What size engine car would I need to pull it? Caravan weight max = 1600KG 2)Easy to tow? 3)Any details about this caravan is greatly appriciated. I have no info. A manual or something would be good.

  24. Hi Each, I am James and live in York, I am new to caravanning. Last year my girlfriend and I decided that we wanted to get into caravanning because we love weekends away and doing the hotel thing was not working out for us, so after a small investment we bought our first (second hand) caravan. I run two businesses as a programmer / webdesigner / print engineer / industrial inkjet consultant and this keeps me busy but when I am away I try as much as possible to disconnect from work. I have setup a few caravan related websites to help other caravan owners / holiday property owners who would like to rent their caravans out to holiday makers. Free for people to list their caravans for rental on my site, there are no monthly, yearly or booking fees for people wishing to list on my site. If you would like more information, help or assistance with anything related to my skills please contact me. Im hoping to become a Trade member on this website soon (iv emailed the admin). Regards
  25. Howdy all, I'm Simon, I'm a musician and photographer. Myself and my wife are pretty new to caravaning and to this forum, so no doubt i'll be back here time and time again begging for advice and hopefully sharing some of our experiences. Hope to speak to some of you soon. All the best Simon
