  1. Hi. Keen to take up caravanning But don’t know where to start tbh. Am starting my new research as I will be buying a tow car and a caravan. people have suggested I look at something like a VW Passat estate due to their awards. What kind of mileage is too high ? Looking at spending approx £10k total on van and car (needs to be automatic) But some people are saying I don’t even need to spend that much and upgrade later. ideas welcomed PS is anyone in South Wales that could give me practical help ? Steve
  2. Hi All, Don't know if this has been covered elsewhere, but a search didn't turn anything up conclusively. I've recently had a 200w solar system installed and it's all now working tickety boo following on from the installation gremlins. What I'd like to do if it's possible, is to wire in a 2000-3000w inverter into the system so that I can plug something that requires 240v in to any of the plug sockets, rather than having to plug them into the front of the inverter. I'm thinking toaster, kettle, microwave, hairdryer, tv etc - but never more than one thing at once. Is this possible? How would a system like this work should I be on an EHU? So, is this achievable and if so, other than the inverter, what parts do I need and how do I go about wiring it in? Thanks in advance.
  3. Hi I am a complete Newbie looking into caravanning. My starting point is to try and determine how much it will probably be to use a touring caravan site per night. An initial browse on the net seems to indicate the cost will most likely be £25 to £35 per night depending on the season etc. Would this be true? Please , would be very grateful of any advise re costs so I can see if I can afford to take up caravanning or not. It would be a 2 /3 berth rig for two pensioners. wanting to explore UK'
  4. Hi all looking at buying a Bailey Unicorn Barcelona as a first caravan. 2012 model. Is there anything I should look out for or is there a better van for the same or similar money. (£11500)
  5. Hi all sorry if this info is here somewhere, but I couldn’t find it. We are newbies, collecting our first van on Tuesday, a 2006 Lunar Quasar 2 berth. We will be making up the double bed in the dinette, and want to purchase two single duvalay mattress toppers to sit side by side. We are not sure what width to buy. Can anyone tell me what width the made up bed is likely to be once we have pulled out the lats and made up the bed ? Weight limits on paYLoad is an issue for us in our van, but we have decided a good nights sleep is a priority.
  6. Hi, Just joined reducing myself. Been caravaning for 15 years with a variety of vans. Currently towing a Bailey Unicorn Valencia (2015) with my Hyundai Santa Fe (2016). Disastrous few days caravaning next Minehead this week. Fridge packed in (confirmed cooling unit failure) and seriously bent awning pole and damage to awning as the result of storms today in Bristol Channel. Is fridge failure and awning damage covered by caravan insurance? Left policey docs at home!
  7. We're back from our first proper trip, three weeks round a readjusted edited version of the Scotland 500 route, with the Rapido pop-top we bought in November after years in tents. And we're converted! We had a great time, and we're also much more confident about so many aspects of caravanning that seemed a little daunting, or simply way outside our experience, before. We've learned a lot too. The weather was mostly very cold, windy, with lots of rain some of the time, and utterly glorious scenery visible at others, and our little van with its oil-filled heater did a superb job at keeping us well homed all the way round. Given that up until Autumn we had no plans even to buy a caravan, there was a lot to learn, and much of the research was done reading and asking questions here and on the CMC forum. We're truly grateful for all the generous sharing of information and experience which made so much difference to the whole trip, from things like how far to tow in a day to all manner of hints. Thanks to all here. We're already having thoughts about all the other places we'd like to go now, including re-visiting some of those on our way round Scotland - though on a further trip we'd make less moves, and stop at a few places for longer rather than aiming to go right round. Thanks again! Richard
  8. Hi, We are looking to purchase a secondhand van, having just sold our trailer tent. Can anyone reccommend a van / layout that we could look at? We are a family of 3, DD is nearly 6 and we don't want a massive van, something compact would be DH's preference as he's not keen on towing. Any help - would be appreciated! Thanks, Marie
  9. Hi New to this site. Thinking of changing my 'van. Been reading about the Coachman Laser with fixed bed model number 640/4 I think. Would welcome feedback and comments about this 'van. Also on dealers in the North West of England. I want a 'van that will last me for years. Will probably be the last one I buy. Want quality. Want it to last. Many thanks.
  10. Hi all, Just thinking about starting up in the caravan world. Currently have a 2 Ltr petrol Mondeo on a 10 plate with approx 46,000 on the clock. Do quite a lot of mileage for work, approx 400 miles a month. Am considering changing the car anyhow so want to get one that can be a good tow car. Will probably go diesel automatic but not sure whether to go 4x4 or just a strong hatchback or estate. I can see positives In a 4x4 as it would give me more choice in van and would also be good in winter months but can also see fuel economy is often a lot less and things like tyres and exhausts and even brake pads etc are a lot more on 4x4s as I am doing a fair daily mileage. In helping me with advice it is fair to say I will probably look for a mid size 2 or 4 berth van to start off with but also like the look of a twin axle with fixed twin beds long term if I get on with caravaning. I am also confused on how old to go car wise as I used to have a 55 plate focus that was costing a fortune in repairs. I need it reliable for work as my job involves going from site to site on a daily basis. Any advice is welcomed. I am not asking people to make the decision for me but know people will have more experience that I currently do. Makes and models especially welcomed as well as general advice. When driving solo I do like a bit of power under my foot !! Thanks in advance Steven
  11. can anyone out there help me iv taken the step to replace my shurflo pump in my 2004 Avondale argente van iv cut and fitted the carver body into van replumbed the system but the wiring has me confused iv used the purple feed off old unit as my "live " feed earthed with white wire as my earth but pump only runs when "pump on " switch is turned on manually open taps and nothing happens I do have a spare whit wire with red trace I would like the pump to run when taps are open can anyone help only had the van a short while but the pump was noisy but I love the van whyever did they stop manufacturing these great vans ? thanks andy (grump52b)
  12. Hi again! I'm testing out everything on my van and have came across a snag. I'm hoping it has a simple solution. The water in the taps of the bathroom of my van is flowing at a good rate/pressure with a good temperature, but the tap in my kitchen flows at a trickle. Any suggestions? It's a 1999 Bailey Pageant Moselle. Cheers Scott
  13. Hi me and my partner have just bought our first caravan a 2 berth Abby monza- lovely little thing and so light to tow! As it is about 20 years old we are looking to do it up, in trying to find the best place to get new curtains and seat covers but am at a dead end. .. Any help???? Thanks, alice!
  14. Hi All I've just joined the community as I'm looking for much needed advice. My wife has finally given into my constant pestering about getting a caravan, but I don't really know where to start looking. There are four of us now, Myself, my wife and two kids (age 3 and 4 months) I loved going on caravan holidays when I was a kid and have many happy memories from different sites all over Wales and the north west. Heres my plan to start off, I'm after a 2nd hand caravan, looking up to £10,000, 4 berth (unless you reccomend higher) and I'm looking to store it on a site for next season, probably in Wales. So here are my questions for all you seasoned pro's! What's a good make of caravan, and what ones should I look at avoiding (if any) Where's the best place to buy one? I've heard of horror stories of police checking the identity plates on caravans and literally seizing them on the spot. when is the best time to buy? What good sites are there in North Wales? And just any tips that you would offer in the buying process. Thanks for reading, and I soon hope to become an active member on the site Andy
  15. My wife and I have recently bought a 1996 Coachman Mirage 460/4, which appears to have been well looked after. We're going away for the first time this weekend and are throughly looking forward to it. Everything in the caravan seems to work and it's surprisingly warm inside without any heating on! We think we've made a good choice but I'd be interested to hear your thoughts and experiences with this caravan. Also, can anyone tell me if it should have had blinds on the front windows as ours doesn't. ...
  16. Hi all. Please excuse my slight excitement, but we've now finally got the van ready for it's first trip out. Its not completely finished as it still needs two new roof lights, but its useable now with new blinds, curtains and cushions etc. Plus a damn good clean inside and out really helped! Have also replaced one of the waste pipes and moved it in the process so it exits with the others. Why it had to exit the other side I dont't know! So keeping it close to home, we've opted for Red Lion Farm just outside Stafford. We're only going for two nights, but its a start!
  17. Hi, I have just joined the forum as we are considering buying a caravan. We have a camper van at present but want more comfort. We would be grateful for any advice we receive from members John & Carol
  18. Hi folks, Firstly, I hope this is the correct part of the forum to post on for my question(s). Assuming that it is just to let you know we are VERY new to caravanning - so new we haven't got a 'van yet. Which brings me to the point of the post. We want to buy something old(ish) that won't break the bank £1500 or so or less) as we don't really know at this juncture weather caravanning will be for us or otherwise. The tow vehicle will be our 2003 Renault Scenic 1. 6 manual petrol which I know is not a great tow car but nevertheless it is what we have and there is no way we will exchange it for a "better" tow car at the present. We do realise the caravan will have to be very light as the Scenic's max. braked permissible towing weight is 1300kg with driver only and with "other cases" (as the handbook puts it) is 1000kg. At least as I understand it. And we don't want to overburden the Scenic. Any tips please on what model would be an option? The whole caravan scene seems a minefield for those lacking in knowledge which we certainly are!! And any other thoughts on what we should be looking (or looking out) for would be appreciated. BTW the 'van MUST have a loo and showering facilities. Many thanks for reading this.
  19. Hello All, I am a Semi-Newbie. Have had a van for 6 yrs but only towed it for 250 miles in that time, so my knowledge is somewhat limited. My little 1991 Mistral GTX is a great luxurious van, but I never really had time to use it. Am now going to take up caravanning properly, and as my daughter is now 15 (and even taller than my wife), the 2 berth Mistral is getting a bit too cramped, so regretably it has to go. As I am about to splash out on a new or nearly new van, I thought I would research the subject first, especially as I will also have to buy a new car to tow it with. In the process came across this superb site. These last few days I have obtained much valuable info, from both this and other sites. The more I find out, the more I realise how little I know, so I will looking forward to reading your postings (and maybe even starting the odd thread too). Hope I can contribute to this site in a positive way. Cheers, Geo.
