  1. Hi, Name is Paulo. Portuguese who moved to England and after a decade of living and Southampton and then Cambridge I am now based in Nuremberg, Germany - that's what happens when you marry a German! Anyway, I have been traveling for doing long distance triathlons for awhile and I tired of booking hotels too far from race start and seeing all of the caravan people relaxed in the morning brewing a their coffees 2 minutes from the race start. My wife also fancies one as we have two children and enjoy camping, going outdoors and driving from our home to Austria, Italy or Croatia is quite easy so we can visit quite a few new places like this. We were looking at quite a few caravan brands and have around 15000 to 18000 euros to spend. Knaus, Adria, Weinsberg were the brands we looked at. Knaus Südwind are quite expensive and the Adria layouts are not great. We really liked the Weinsberg 480QDK. Found online someone who used one once and wants to sell it. However, they told us that the Weinsberg caravans come with a ten year impermeability warranty if you test it every 12 months. They failed to test in the first 12 months which invalidated the warranty. Due to a sale which ended up falling through, they tested after 2 years and a problem was found at that point. Both sides of the caravan are being replaced by the manufacturer but it worries me that we'll have problems forever even after being "fixed". They are selling it for 15000 eur with a caravan tent which I heard it quite expensive but then again the caravan can be bought new for 17000 eur so I am thinking maybe I should buy it new and save the worry. What do you think? What are the right question to ask when buying a caravan and which things should I ensure are OK if buying used? Kind regards. Paulo
  2. We have just joined having towed some 30 years ago and had motorhomes for the last 6 years and decided a caravan would suit us better had the Bailey unicorn Madrid 2 months and loving it
  3. Well I've arrived at last; trying to find my way around this very comprehensive site. So just want to say hello to all you lovely caravanners. I wonder if there is a badge or sticker to display to other caravanners on a campsite that we live here? Sorry. Only been here five minutes and already off-topic.
  4. Just a brief hello and was wondering has anyone any experience of owning a Volvo XC70, thinking of changing my Nissan Xtrail that I have owned from new for 14 years to somehting that would pull a large van easier.
  5. Hi I'm Phil I live in Shropshire and have just bought an old Swift Silhouette 2berth to enjoy in my retirement hopefully, I am at the moment just checking everything is working and will keep you posted.
  6. Hi, my name is Andy! I'm 21 and I was registered homeless for a few years, since I was 16 (this forced me to drop my college education) and in november 2014, I managed to secure this flat which is disastrously expensive. Unfortunately, because of my current education, I can't seem to find a job (I've been searching for a job for years too even whilst homeless, living in hostels or sofa surfing) paying enough to cover the cost of rent and bills and cost of living also and I want to start my own business. I've decided I need to do two things, One of which is move out of Leicester and another is to get out of this flat so I can save some money toward starting my business and I know living in a caravan is a great way to save on costs! I currently rely on housing benefit which thankfully covers my full rent due to my homelessness circumstances, otherwise I'd be paying an extra £40 a week out of my benefits on top of bills and council tax and everything else in between. I'm here to find out more about life in a caravan, I now it's cheaper but I'd also like a rough idea of weekly/monthly/yearly cost? I'm also looking for a caravan, preferably one which is self-sufficient but if not I will manage. I don't really have any money at the moment because I'm on benefits but I could probably pay installments, so if anybody is looking to help a guy in need. .. Even if it isn't perfect, depending on the quality and condition, we could talk about cost and how much you'd need me to pay per week. .. Comment with your contact details and we can talk further email address and phone number and price preferably. I would really appreciate it, otherwise I'm stuck here forever. I have no local connection outside of Leicester but with a caravan, that wouldn't matter. At the moment, I do not have a car but I may be able to get one to tow me to where I need to go to pick it up. I have an address for my post to go and I know it's a large transition but has anybody ever moved from house into a caravan? I look forward to making new friends along the way and cheers for reading this! Andy
  7. New year, new member. I have found the section on the new Bailey Unicorn very interesting and helpful. We now have ours and we are looking forward to our first outing to York later in the month. If anything newsworthy crops up I will let you know.
  8. Hi my name is nick pippard from Bridgwater Somerset. look forward to chatting to you All.
  9. Hi to all! We keep a large hobby caravan more or less permanently pitched on a site run by an English couple in Normandy near Bayeux. My husband and I have been caravaners for many years, but no longer fancy towing, especially with the size of caravan we have now, which we bought about 2 years ago and which we use more or less as a holiday home. The van is a 2002 Exclusive 5 berth Hobby, and in good condition, but there are a couple of items that we would like to replace. So I'm hoping that somebody can help with this question: what's the best place / way to get Hobby caravan spare parts, either in France or the UK, or even direct from Germany, if that is feasible? We are relative newcomers to Hobbys. Hope you can help!
  10. Hi Im a caravan novice and have just purchased a a Bailey Ranger GT60 520/4 my tow car is a BMW 330i Msport Touring. We have swaped to caravaning from camping for the last 6 years hoping to do more of this country! and found this forum while searching for information on caravaning. so hopfully i will gain loads of information form the members on this forum.
  11. A note to say 'hi!', and thanks for all the useful stuff I've been reading so far - this is a very valuable source of advice for someone new to caravanning. We've been campers up until now, but having two springer spaniel rescue dogs, we decided a caravan would be more practical than the tent. We have just purchased an old Avondale Perle Orion Custom SE (1993) to see how we get on, and are setting about doing it up a bit (though it's in running order). We've got a Citroen Xsara Picasso 1. 6 HDI to haul it, and are looking forward to our first trip away some weekend soon, with a bottle of port and a few good books. My parents and brother each have a static caravan, so I'm used to the (bigger) caravan life. My only caravan towing experience was hauling my brother's old 4 berth tourer with my 1. 4L 66bhp Astra. I think it must have been about 120% of kerbweight at a guess, and hills were, eh, interesting. .. I know better now. Cheers, Jason
  12. Hi all, just an introduction and a thank you to all members for the advice and knowledge gathered from these forums over time. I have decided to become a member and maybe able to offer some help somewhere along the line as well. I have been caravaning since the late 70s with all sorts of different outfits, from when my kids were toddlers to now taking grandkids away with us. i am lucky enough to have been able to tour in most of Europe and still love finding new places to see both here at home and further afield. i have just taken early retirement so will have more time to tour.
