  5. Also found in 2014 France on Thomson's Travels ____________________________________________ Coutances is one of those places which we have passed through many times, but have never stopped in. The campsite, the municipal site, was situated in a wooded area next to the Sports facilities. If you search Google for 'Coutances Municipal Camping' it takes you to the offices in the Town Hall, so do what we did and search for "Les Vignettes, Coutances". We arrived at the campsite without fuss or fanfare, to find that the doors to the office were locked. . . However, before we could get irritated, a man appeared from around the side of the building and welcomed us with open arms. Electricity, we found by trial and error was only 5 Amps, so after resetting the trip a couple of times, we limited the power consumed, and spent an enjoyable evening drinking Merlot and watching M*A*S*H. on DVD. After the longest sleep I have ever, to my recollection, had, over 12 hours, then a hot shower in the site facilities and breakfast, we set off for town at about midday. The walk down through the municipal campsite lead through the towns impressive sports facilities, which boasted of 3 full sized football pitches, tennis courts, a 50metre swimming pool, skate park and exercise equipment (Take note England, this is a town of only 9,000 inhabitants!), to the lower part of the town, we walked up the old streets following an up hill course, until we reached the center of the town on top of the hill, where, in splendour, stood the Cathedral of Notre-Dame de Coutances. A majestic building which dominates the skyline and which can be seen from miles around. The Cathedral is free to enter and the colours refracted on to the stone walls from the stained glass windows is beautiful to see. We wandered around the inside and out taking in the history of this wonderful building. We then walked back to the caravan, narrowly missing a number of bars and restaurants on our way. We explored the remains of the towns dilapidated and unkempt Roman aqueduct. After a quick beer we drove to the E. Leclerc to buy us a fish supper. The supermarkets here in France know how to put on a display when it comes to fish! Everything from Lobsters to prawns and cod to eels in fact, almost any type of fish you could possibly desire was on sale. Well, after much dillying and dallying we plumped for a lump of Morue (Cod) with a promise to be more adventurous next time.

  12. Are we The Forgotten Tourists? I live in Ireland and for the past two years have taken my family to France for our summer holidays. However, this year we decided to stay at home and toured Ireland. Mainly my reason for staying at home was the increasingly expensive cost of getting ferries to GB and / or France. Having experienced some of the wonderful sights (and sites) within Ireland and GB I believe that we have a lot to offer from a tourism perspective. Unfortunately, I believe that Ferry costs across the Irish Sea (both directions) are somewhat prohibitive. Should Tourism Authorities being doing more to help lobby ferry companies that operate across the Irish Sea to drive down travel costs? I understand from similar posts that Campers and Caravanners who live in GB are equally put off travelling with their Units to Ireland because of the cost of ferry. Indeed, one poster commented that they could travel to Calais 3 to 4 times for the same price that it would cost to travel across the Irish Sea. Do members feel that Tourism Authorities are currently doing enough to support and promote Campers and Caravanners who wish to travel between Ireland and GB for both short breaks and longer holidays? Frequently we read and hear statistics about number of flights, cruise ships, hotel occupancy rates etc. .. but rarely do I hear tourism reports about the passion that is Camping and Caravanning. Is it just me or does anyone else feel that this 'oversight' is a little unjust? Thanks in advance for reading. NikonPhotoBro
  13. Hi Guys, Please excuse the length of my moan, and skip to my real help question if you feel like it Ive had enough. ..... of camping. Spent a small fortune on gear to go away with after 1 good camping trip almost 2 years ago on borrowed gear. Last summer was a wash out, but we steadily bought gear storing it away in the hope of some good weather and getting away sometime with our 11 year old son who was double excited about it all. Watched the weather forecast for the bank hol and chose Dumfries as it had a great forecast, Newcastle having a poor one so we packed up and went across yesterday. . It was cold and very windy, took 3 hours to put the tent up in the wind, its basically a six sleeping giant parachute, thought we were gonna loose our boy at one point when the wind caught it properly We tried to make the most of it, but by 10:30 pm were so cold and cheesed of we went to bed, the sleeping bags seemed to be the best place to be. . even our little west highland terrier was cold and he would sleep outside if we let him. Got up this morning and checked the weather again, was more of the same, by 11am even our normally un-swayable lad was wanting to come home and abandon our little trip away. I was all set to leave the tent were it with a "Free to good home" sign hung on it, but my wife reminded me how much we spent on it until I came out of my huff and spent the next 2 hours 2 hours packing it all away. . (in my mind i was thinking this tent is never going to see the light of day again until i sell it on e-bay and a proper camper comes and picks it up). By 3pm we were back at home, tail between legs and wandering around our streets street party that we werent going to goto because we were going to have a fab 4 day camping bonanza. What I will remember however was the envy i felt at the caravaners and how nice it looked in there vans as I was walking the dog at 10pm freezing cold and feeling mighty cheated On the way home i was looking at all the caravans on the road and in particular the cars towing them. I resolved then I wasnt done with hitting the road and pitching up some where (pre booked ofc) and getting the deck chairs out and watching the stars while chatting to friendly neighbours while enjoying the fresh air. Im thinking that Im not really a camper, preffering a more solid base for our expeditions. Thanks for reading Paul

  15. Hello there! No longer FutureCaravanning Magazine. ..... now it will be known as GroovyCaravanning Magazine! Our first issue will contain celebrity interviews with Frazer Hines (of Emmerdale and Dr Who fame) and Jordan Reyne, a New Zealand rock-chick musician who played Glastonbury this year and, er, stayed in a tent. In the mud. Should be an ace interview!! There will be features on Winter Caravanning, using your caravan/motorhome as a base for Hogmanay, the changes after ten years “out of the caravan loop”, a feature from a new family going to Portugal for 6 months, reviews, opinions, and of course, what will no-doubt become our famous ANTI-CLARKSON rant. Hope you’ll check it out. www. groovycaravanning. com New email: fcmag@hotmail. co. uk What does everybody think? Your advice and comments so far have been VERY helpful :-) The Editor.
