  1. I am making / installing an automatic on-board water tank filling system to my 2009 Bailey Senator Arizona. I made one of these for my Lunar Delta about 20 years ago. Now I have another Caravan with an onboard tank I find it annoying how complicated Bailey have made it to fill the on-board tank. I have to remove the cushions from the rear locker, lift the rack, "set" two change-over valves, (correct combination, depending if I am using external, internal or filling internal from external). Then switch the electric pump to "fill", wait until it's filled, and then switch the valves as required for "operation". I looked on the market – there is NOTHING, nothing on Ebay, Nothing on “The Web”, nothing on YouTube, nothing in the Forums on how to do this… No gadgets, no advice, no discussion – maybe I’m the only one that wants this ???? I have added an Carver / Truma Crystal filter inlet into the side of the caravan directly next to the on-board tank. I will use my old Truma external pump to fit this fitting. This will fill the tank directly. I am fitting a relay (in a small plastic box to be neat) along with an "audible" alarm to warn me the external pump is operating. As my tank already has a "low level" sensor and a "high level sensor" (to stop the on-board [in fill mode] pump when full) it will be an easy job to do. I am fitting 2 switches - 1) Off/Fill to High Level 2) Fill to low level only (reserve level). If anyone is interested, I am going to document this fully with Photos on my Blog as it will be too detailed (and the photos) for here: https://tony-sparks.co.uk/blog/2019/09/13/automatic-on-board-water-tank-fill-system-tracker/ You will need to cut a hole in the side of your van to fit a Truma (or pump interface of your choice). You will need to be "capable" with 12v Electrics, and able to wire a 12v relay and a couple of switches. I *may* consider making the "control" boxes when I have finished mine - if there is any demand- but I may not! BTW: While you are about it (Bailey Senator Only) - I will tell you how to change the "ancient" battery on your (Secret Location) Tracker / Alarm system (mine was 10 years old and bulging - and was down to 2.2v!). Replacement battery - £14.50 delivered from Ebay! Any Comments ?
  2. I have an automatic rear wheel drive Jaguar XF which I use for towing. 18" wheels with 245 45R 18 100Y Goodyear tyres. Awful in the snow despite all the gizmos you can apply to the various drive modes! So much so that I avoid using the car in the snow because in general being retired, I don't need to. However similar issues on camsites with grass/mud and even in these cases when attempting minimal slopes. I have heard on this forum with a post about their use on an SUV and it is confirmed by a local tyre supplier that Michelin Crossclimate are very good. I guess the key factor for improved grip on snow or mud is the tread pattern. The goodyear are designed with the standard deep grooves around the circumference of the tyre and more minimal lateral grooving. Suspect given the high speed rating that this is also to reduce tyre noise at speed? Does anyone have any alternatives to the Crossclimate tyres for me to consider before having to take a second mortgage out before changing the tyres?!!!
  3. Hi. Thinking about changing tow car. The two that have been recommended are Vauxhall Antara and Chevrolet Captiva, which I think are basically the same car, just that the Chevrolet is 7 seats. Would be going diseal automatic. My only concern is that Chevrolet has now pulled out of UK. Would we go to Vauxhall or independent for servicing ? Will that cause a problem. Prob looking at a 3-4 year old in either one. Please can I have some honest opinions, especially from those that own and tow using either one of them. Caravan around 1,700kg if anyone wants to suggest an alternative 4x4 tow car. Thanks in advance
  4. Looking at getting one of these in the next couple of months to tow the van. Got a budget of up to £6. 5k (£7k if I find one I can't refuse). I want an M Sport model and was initially looking at a 2. 0l. However a friend (not a caravanner) reckons buying a 2. 5l would be more beneficial due to it having a six cylinder engine instead of the 2. 0l's four cylinder. I'd only been looking at models with manual transmission's as I remember being told automatics can be a nightmare with a van on the back, especially on variably hilly roads, and worked out costing a lot more in juice when towing. The questions I have are. .. a) Are automatics that much more expensive on fuel when towing or is it not very noticeable? Does anyone have one of these and if so, how do you rate them? Looking online, my budget will get me a 525d M Sport around a 2006 model with approx 120k on the clock. As you can probably tell, I'm new to the game, only started towing last year. And before anyone suggests it, 530d M Sport is a hefty hike north on the insurance side of things compared to the 525d M Sport. Thanks in advance. John
  5. Got 2. 0L Diesel Auto Galaxy. Been thinking its been doing this for a while. When it changes gear its not as smooth as it used to be. Its like if you take too long and leave your foot on the clutch when in a manual. Anyway, this weekend pulled my caravan and it seemed worse. Going uphills it was as if the car was revving slightly, then catching, then revving again over and over. Not extreme but noticeable. Anything obvious to check? Just wondered if extra load towing has made the problem more obvious?
  6. Hi all, we're after a little advice. At the end of last year we changed towcars from a \Hyundai Tucson 4wd to a Nissan Pathfinder, the price was right & my wife wanted a heavier car to be a better match with our caravan. The nissan in question is the 2. 5 litre diesel automatic, & while we're both comfortable driving the auto solo, neither of us have towed with an auto. My big question is that when driving solo at 60mph, which is our usual (when allowed) towing crusing speed, the auto box is often on the cusp of a change down in gear - uncomfy & uneconomical. Do I overcome this problem by adjusting towing speed, or do I use the "manual" function to maintain the gear I want to be in? How do people get on using cruise control with an automatic when towing, is it a yes or no?
