  1. I'm pretty sure I'm right about the following but it would be great if someone could give me a reassuring nod... I have a butane tank in the caravan and I'd like to switch to propane. I can simply buy a propane pigtail (the pigtail is the part with the hose that connects to the regulator, right?!) and replace it myself? There's no harm to the gas system or regulator in just switching over like that? It's a standard Truma bulkhead 30 mbar, which from Googling seems to do both butane and propane. Many thanks.

  3. Many thanks for all the replies, much appreciated. I turned the heater on again, turned the heater on max and opened the windows. After 20 mins, the smell was gone, so it must have just been dust or something. Very pleased! I didn't realise the blower would work off the battery too. I don't see a switch that mentions the blower but I will investigate.

We have just upgraded from our little old 90s Elddis to a newer 2006 Swift - might not seem like much of an upgrade to some people on this forum, but we are delighted All has been well maintained and in great order but I've just a couple of questions about the Truma gas heater. I started the heater last night and it fired up no problem and got hot but there was an absolute stink from it, like burning plastic. Now, it's possible that it was just dust burning off, as it's been in storage for a long time, but is there anything else I should be looking out for? Second daft question - there is no blow heating unless plugged into the mains, right? Off-grid the Truma gas heater will just act like an old-fashioned little gas heater, correct? Thanks!
  5. Thank you for all the advice and pointers. In the end, my little 75Ah battery seems to be knackered, it's not holding much of a charge. I'm not hugely surprised. I decided to bite the bullet and I bought a new one - I chose a Numax XV31MF 105Ah battery https://www.tayna.co.uk/leisure-batteries/numax/xv31mf/ which I thought was decently priced. One last question - should I pop it on the charge before using it for the first time?
  6. Thanks, I just had no idea what was behind this old Clipsal socket. Okay, so that seems very easy. Do you think a fuse is required? Some of those 12v USB sockets seem to have an inline fuse and some don't. I'll only be charging phones on it. Yes, good point. I'm now hunting on Google for dual USB sockets, with switches, preferably in white I'm getting picky now.
  7. My old 90s Elddis is going to see some off-grid caravanning this year. I'd like a USB socket installed somewhere in the van to charge phones and I've been researching the easiest way to do this but then it occurred to me that there's a weird two pin (at slight angles) socket near the door. From some Googling, this appears to be a Clipsal 2-pin socket. I'm not sure if there's a more correct term or not. Anyway, my caravan is in storage at the moment but in a couple of weeks I'll have it out and I'm wondering what I might need to convert that socket to a USB socket. I found this: https://www.towsure.com/adapt-it-1-12v-adaptor-2-pin-socket-to-cigar-lighter which is certainly the easiest way to do this but I'm wondering if I could go a little neater and remove the Clipsal socket and put a USB socket straight in? Something like this? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Lighter-Socket-Double-USB-Socket-12-24V-Waterproof-Marine-White/252764911842 Presumably behind the Clipsal socket is two wires and I can remove these from the Clipsal and solder them straight into the pins at the back of the USB socket? Or maybe I'm being totally naive here? Grateful for any advice or guides on this because although I can find lots of YouTube videos about USB installations, I can't find a single one about converting from these old Clipsal 2-pin sockets to USB. Thanks!
  8. I'm the OP and I really appreciate the replies to my newbie message. Earlier I said that the battery had reached 14.5V and was coming back down but it turns out that I was incorrect. It's actually going back and forth between 14.5V and 14.4V every 15 minutes or so. It's now been on charge (on 12V STD mode) for maybe 11 hours or so and it got to 14.4V hours ago. I'm not sure what to do now - should I leave it on overnight? If I stop charging now and leave it at 14.4V, will that damage it?
  9. I appreciate the comments, thanks for all the pointers. It says "Leisure Power" on it so I was hoping it was a leisure battery and not just a car battery. Either way, it's not going to be enough capacity for off-grid getaways, but I'm hoping it will be enough to provide a bare minimum to get started as money is tight. I do intend to upgrade to a good AGM leisure battery in a few months, probably something like this: https://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/15901771/platinum-agm-plus-leisure-battery-agmlb6110l-100ah-15901771 The Maypole charger is a 4-stage "smart" charger. The battery appeared to reach 14.4v or 14.5v after just a few hours and now it's on the way back down to (I presume, from what I've read) 13.8v. So hopefully this means it's not a knackered battery...
  10. I bought a little 90's Elddis starter van last year, which we used on pitches with EHU, which I understand means the battery is usually charged to about 80%. Over the winter, I finally removed the battery and brought it home, as we're doing some off-grid caravanning this year. It's charging on a 4A Maypole charger at the moment but I had a few questions if someone could help me. I've Googled and read lots of stuff on this forum but I read conflicting messages, usually about whether the battery should be vented or not. So, here are my amateur questions: 1. I've attached a photo of the battery. I presume if this was an AGM battery, it would have said on it, so I guess it's not one of those. Is it a valve regulated lead acid (VRLA) battery? 2. It has, what I assume, is a little black plastic vent at the back right. Presumably this is where I'd attach a venting hose. Is this required when charging in the house? It's charging in an airy kitchen. In the caravan, it's in a hatch on the outside, so I would guess it doesn't need vented? 3. I remember my dad used to unscrew something on the top of a battery when he was charging, and leave it off slightly. My amateur guess is that this isn't required with this type of battery? Of course, the battery may well be knackered, it's an old battery from an old van, but it seemed worth a good charge. It has rapidly charged up to 13.1V in about 20 minutes of charging and climbing.   11. We bought an old 1990s Elddis caravan this year and I'm wondering how we use Flogas Gaslight cylinders with it. At the moment we're using little 4.5kg Butane Calor cylinders. I've been researching for several days but it's hard to put the info together for these old caravans. I think I'm right in saying that I don't have a bulkhead regulator. We have a screw-in regulator (unsure of correct term) and it says on it Butane LR2108 29mbar on it (photo attached). So can anyone tell me what I need to do to convert this old van to the new Gaslight cylinders? I've read of simple pigtails for bulkhead regulators but I'm pretty sure that's not the case here. Would appreciate any advice!

  13. Hi, I'm a bit of a beginner with caravanning and have a newbie question. This is our first year with the caravan and I've done a few trips. I have disconnected the gas completely with the spanner every time before leaving a site and reconnected when arriving on the next one and I'm just wondering if this is necessary? Is it okay to drive with it physically connected (but obviously switched off)? It's a small 4.5kg butane tank on an old 1990s Elddis caravan, if that makes any difference. It would be nice to just switch the gas on and off rather than disconnecting it altogether but obviously I want to be safe. Thanks so much for any advice.
