  1. At the risk of overkill, don't forget that Croatia joined the EU on the 1st July this year. The border crossings into and out of Neum have now changed location and we found checks were more thorough, but no long queues as we had expected. The only problem over the years in crossing that enclave, has been getting the appropriate vehicle Green card insurance. There could be more, but the only Insurers currently providing it (since Saga tried for one year then dropped it) are the NFU and the Caravan Club insurers. We understand the bridge is still likely to go ahead when the money is found, but probably not in my lifetime! So the only other option is the Ferry from Ploce to Trpanje on Peljesac.
  2. There you go, John! I am sure that is how you perceived/found the site (when?), and I agree there have been complaints over the years. This year, there was plentiful hot water at all times, even when showers were in demand with the arrival of tour busses and loads of young people having showers at all times of the day (and night?). As to the drainage problem you found, this has been overcome in two ways, by improving the drainage and by leaving squeegees for customer use to mop up/direct any overflow into the drains. As to the choice of fields, you have pointed out the different price levels for different services and Field B is the most expensive with a high level of services on most of the pitches that attract the higher tariff. There you get water (shared between two pitches,) and new CEE17 electricity connection. The new Field C opposite the entrance to Field B is in the course (nearly finished) of being upgraded with new pitches overlooking the entrance to Gruz harbour. Those pitches are fully serviced with water, electricity and lighting. I have been going to Solitudo to inspect it since it opened after the end of the Balkan war and I have never seen formica in the washing up areas. All are regularly painted a-fresh in blue for the men and pinkish for the ladies. There is also two new toilet blocks behind the Reception with a new Chimnea and a cooking area for guests. There are some long leads needed, particularly in Field A and these are readily available from the office without charge. There was also a previous problem with some leads crossing roads (a safety hazard) and most of this has now been overcome - certainly there is no need, but some campers are not that well trained. There has been no supermarket on-site for some three years, but there is a privately owned one between fields A & B on the road leading to a Private estate behind Field A. There used to be one owned by the campsite on Field A, which was closed down due to lack of demand. You don't say when you stayed there in your quote, but maybe you do in your original post. There is also a small shopping Mall called Mini Stradun As well as the Copacabana beach, there is also a quieter one further along the coast, which is used a lot by Argosy and Tirena hotel guests. Hotel President has its own beach. Of course there are also many in and around Dubrovnik and further North and South on the coastline. It is still a lovely destination to visit - if you can bear the distance.

    CAMPING SOLITUDO - DUBROVNIK

The nearest and the largest campsite to the old town of Ragusa, better know as Dubrovnik, the pearl of the Adriatic. The site consists of four camping fields, A, B, C & D. C is primarily used for tour groups such as Kontiki, Top Deck etc. Field A is popular with tent campers, as it is a little rugged (after all this coastline is all rock!) but has plenty of shade. We prefer this field as it is nearest to the restaurant and to the bus stop into town and it is no problem to use a couple of levelling wedges, which may be needed on many of the pitches in this field. Field B is the largest and has the best facilities with many pitches giving full service. There are a few 'bungalows' in the corner of this field but they are quite unobtrusive. This field is the nearest to the Copacabana Beach, which is shingle and about 150/200m away. That has a restaurant, coffee bar and the usual beach facilities - campers on Solitudo also may use the large swimming pool in the adjacent Hotel - Valamar Club. The last field D is in the final stages of being upgraded with large serviced flat pitches and some pitches with great views across the bay entering Dubrovnik harbour. The toilets are very clean and plenty of hot water. Staff are very helpful. We love it.

  5. Practially ALL the campsites I have stayed at in Europe (apart from France) have staff that speak excellent English. You have already had some contact with them, so why not give them a telephone call. I have added the contact details below. Familie Flemisch Freizeitzentrum Schloss Helmsdorf GbR Schloss Helmsdorf 1 D 88090 Immenstaad am Bodensee Baden-Württemberg Phone 0049 (0)7545 6252
  6. Thank you Alan and Russell - seems like your car park is a different place to Wiggybn's, but thanks anyway Wiggybn, for your view. But, then we all view our locations in a different light. I will have to try it out when we set off on our travels in May 2012.
  7. I regularly use the 'free' parking area at Calais to have a rest before travelling onwards to Central Europe on our travels. I catch a late ferry then after a quick breakfast, we set off rested for our long journey. Our route takes us past Dunkirk, so I am wondering if a similar parking area is available at the Dunkirk Ferry Terminal. Anyone with any experience of that, please?
  8. It really is ones personal preference. With such a selection of SatNavs available and the choices of routes that they offer, if you get one you like then stick with it. My preference is something else, which works for me - I have been driving car and caravan, solo car and now a motorhome across europe doing between 2000 miles up to 6000 miles a trip for some 50 years and since testing more than one SatNav manufacturer I have settle on a dedicated Caravan device with maps for the whole of Europe (41 countries). Suits me, but others will have different views.
  9. Agree. We are regular visitors to Croatia. This year we did around 4500 miles with a fuel cost of over £1000! - That was over two months. We are planning the same journey for next year but the site fees are going to be heavier. .. we choose the cheapest pitches, but that does not help a lot. We are both getting on a bit, so we are spending the children's heritage as fast as possible.
  10. Saga with David is finished as we found it better to communicate via Email. To sum up, though, the Dubrovnik campsite, Solitudo is not open and we failed to find another that is in the area for Christmas. Shame, as we have stayed there over Christmas and it is a delightful experience and the temperature was in the upper teens. Very pleasant.
  11. David, I have sent you a PM. Could you respond using either a PM or send me an email. Graham
  12. Ouch! Sorry about the bad formatting. I spent ages putting each column under the correct heading then when I tried to edit it, I was refused permission. Basically there should be three columns: (1) POI systems (2) Country name & (3) Camera detection equipment. Treat it as a game :-)
  13. My book shows that site Autocamp Matkovica, in Srebreno, to be open from April to October - phone (020) 485868 Email: ruza. kleswkovic@du. t-com. hr. I know of the site but never stayed there. There are a few sites in that area in Mlini but sorry, have no personal knowledge of them. You could try contacting the Croatian Camping Union http://www. google. co. uk/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=croatian%20camping%20union&source=web&cd=1&sqi=2&ved=0CC8QFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww. camping. hr%2F&ei=EvvQTujuD8638gP4wpXbDw&usg=AFQjCNHq0JczVPSS58k_f0nfkuuq_4cSvw&sig2=aQ6yXPCSWnEuQ2mo95cpcg - they might be able to help you if I cannot, but I'm not giving up yet.

  15. Yes, 'detect' being the operative word.
