      Forum upgrade   12/10/17

Hi everyone, As you're probably aware, we've been in the process of upgrading the Caravan Talk forum software for a while. I can now confirm that the software has been upgraded and we're fully up to date. Please note that this new software is quite different in appearance and function, so may require a bit of relearning. We are in the process of refining the look, features and experience to make it a bit better and more familiar. If you spot any issues please let us know in the feedback forum. Unfortunately any posts between Monday morning and now have been lost. This is due to when the database snapshot was taken for the upgrade, this may also affect new members since then. We do apologise for this, but we have tried to keep disruption to a minimum. We are already aware and working on the following issues: PayPal payment issues for CT Supporters Forum design, lack of CT branding including colours Temporary loss of reviews databases Navigation bar needs refining We will keep this list up to date, so please check here before posting new updates, or to keep on tabs of our progress. The software was upgraded in order to provide you with a more secure, reliable, faster experience, whilst providing us with more tools to improve the features and options for the forum. Thank you for your continued support. Ben and the CT Team

      Trouble logging in?   17/10/17

If you're an existing member and having trouble logging in you might find this useful... The new forum software uses your display name, not your "username" to login, as usernames have been merged into display names. If you're not sure which is which, the name that appears next to your posts is your display name, use this to login, along with your usual password. Hope this helps, see you on the forum soon!

    • I have sympathy with all who were unable to use NEC tickets - Owing to illness I was the same this year so my press pass went unused. Gordon.
    • As said looks like someone has done a sharp turn and the rear of the tow vehicle has bent the handle in to 90deg . Bending it back out could cause it to crack so I would just replace it with a long handle suggested by Paul B .   Dave
    • Yesss, that thorney old one again!!! I think we are all aware of the "Recommendation" about any trailers gross weight should not exceed 85% of the towing vehicles kerb-weight (which is never listed anywhere) I am curious to know who first came up with what is now almost considered (by some) to be the law, and quoted by many as being something that should be rigidly adhered to. My thinking is that a vehicle manufacturer is the person who is best placed to dictate what the maximum weight that any trailer drawn behind it should weigh and, by a simply process of subtraction, that can be ascertained from the vehicles plate. So why has someone decided on this blanket  85% "rule" which fails to take into account what the makers, who should know better than anyone else, say is 100% safe?? (Think in terms of corporate liability and would a manufacturer risk being held responsible for an over generous allowance?)   Many vehicles, such as Land Rovers, Landcruisers etc are, according to the manufacturers, capable of towing trailers vastly in excess of the towing vehicles gross, let alone kerb, weight, I am pretty sure that Land Rovers can tow up to 3500Kg, yet the CMC, CCC,  (and even the AA) still peddle this 85% advice. So does anyone KNOW why this 85% figure first came into being, and is still being quoted as a "Rule"?? I am seeking a definitive answer based on facts  rather than conjecture such as "I think its because. ..." or "My dads uncles next-door-neighbours-milkmans-pal-says-its-because" Is it still relevant bearing in mind the advances in vehicle technology that now provide anti-lock braking, automatic stability control, trailer assist,  caravan ATC etc etc So, to quote a (very old) TV quiz programme. .......  "Answers please" Andy
    • The solution is simple; if you do not agree with the terms imposed by a particular site - go elsewhere. Gordon.
    • Please don't tar us all with the same brush or make assumptions. I have booked for short overnight stays over the phone, particularly when having to catch a ferry early the next day. The site owners have always been fully aware of my visit and have been paid for a full 24 hours even though I may only have stayed long enough to catch 40 winks. Apart from the convenience of setting up quicker, we have always treated our motorhomes in the same way as the caravans, and used official campsites rather than freeloading in lay-bys or using campsite facilities without permission. There are "bad apples" in all walks of life but thankfully there are fewer than some may think in caravanning. Gordon.
