Derbyshire Well Dressings - Summer 2013

blog-0664286001371031976.jpgThe Well Dressing season is upon us again.

For the uninitiated, Well dressing is a tradition practiced across middle England but is most closely associated with the Villages of Derbyshire and the Staffordshire Moorlands. The practice, which is thought to have originated as a means of "blessing" a well to keep the water clean and ward off the disease has been in evidence since at least 1349 when the first recorded Well Dressing took place in the Derbyshire village of Tissington and still continues today. After a period of decline in the modern era Well Dressing has enjoyed something of a revival in the last 10 years and many villages now use it as a focal point of much bigger summer celebrations
