craigderby Posted August 18, 2014 Share Posted August 18, 2014 My friend is thinking of selling his 2007 C220D Auto Estate, and I'm tempted in having it and letting my Mondeo go. I had a bit of a search round, but can't find alot of feedback about what they're like as a towcar. So I thought I'd ask up, and see if anyone has any personal experience. Phil O Posted August 19, 2014 Share Posted August 19, 2014 Both can tow 1800kg, had 2010 Mondeo 2. 0ltr titanium hatch (manual), now have C220 Merc estate (manual) both good cars, no problems dragging Challenger 570 around Europe last year and this. craigderby Posted October 30, 2014 Author Share Posted October 30, 2014 Just to update. The Merc has done it's first towing today and has coped without a problem. I can only really compare it to Mondeo, as otherwise I've only had 4x4s. I'd say stability is on a par with the Mondeo, slightly less bouncy but that's probably due to this one having the sport pack which has firmer suspension than standard. The big advantage is the gearing, in the Mondeo it needed leaving in 5th at motorway speeds, but the Merc is sat in top at 2 thousand revs and it just make it feel more relaxed. Phil O Posted October 30, 2014 Share Posted October 30, 2014 I've just had my 1st problem with the Merc, clutch slave cylinder packed up. It's internal (within the clutch housing) £720 later Ours has towed our Challenger 570 over 4000 miles this summer with no problems so despite the hefty bill I still love the car. Mechanic stated that the failure has nothing to do with towing, just one of those things, having been used to a company car for a long time a bill like this has brought me back down to earth with a massive bump. craigderby Posted October 30, 2014 Author Share Posted October 30, 2014 That's bad luck. Strangely my Dad's e-class just had a gearbox problem which set him back nearly 2 grand. However it's just hit 300000 miles, and other than servicing it's the first money he's spent on it. If you tow I would recommend that the gearbox is flushed every 50K miles.
