Water, Water...

Recommended Posts

So there I was sitting in my Schooner eating my lunch and all I could hear was running water. No taps open, so maybe it's on the tv? No turns out the hot water line connector had parted company with just at the kitchen sink tap hot water tail.

Water every where. Lucky we were in the van (still a lot of water) what if we'd just gone out and were on a serviced pitch!!

Trouble is how to stop it happening again, can't turn the water off, it's too inconvenient. Nothing had broken as I simply connected the push connector back to the tail and all has been well.

And it's not the first time this has happened, another owner told me he had the same happen the night he picked his new van up. He thought the pipes had never been connected and therefore, no pressure testing had been done (even took the van back to Elddis to argue the toss), but thinking back from what he had described it's the same problem.

The only thing wrong that I could see was that the pipe was really taught, having been connected then clipped back, I left the clip off. Even if in the van would you wake up at night?

The simple way of dealing with this type of problem on boats is to use two jubilee clips on each connection. If you use this method things will not come apart.

However be aware there are a lot of pattern clips of the jubilee type on the market. Most are made in China and are of an inferior soft metal, they are not to be trusted. Don’t use them use the genuine article! Then sleep soundly.

And make sure you get the right size clip.

Sorry, I had to smile to myself when I started reading this - I wasn't associating Schooner with a caravan, but as boat on water, so, yes, there would be the sound of running water!

Hope you get everything sorted - I hate problems concerning water, very messy!

Surely just switching the pump off on the panel would be a) convenient and B) allow you peace of mind?

Which is why we use an aquaroll type mains connector. As we leave or turn in the pump is switched off.

Non of us should need too as the vans should be better put together. It's not as easy as just a hose connector but a dammed sight safer

Thanks for that, we do need better built vans, especially as the jubilee clips won't work, nor would turning off the pump.

It was an inline push/click plumbing connection that came adrift, not the plastic hose, so to use jubilee clips you'd have to replace all the connections in the van (some of which are hidden behind panels) that would undoubtedly invalidate any warranty you had.

Turning the pump off does not account for water in the system, which can be considerable if as in our case its a hot water connection adrift. Plus, you've still got to turn the pump back on, how soon would you notice, we were sitting next to the leak when it started and it took us a bit to twig. And I'd still say it's too inconvenient and too easily forgotten. Is that what you do at home?

We use a caravan to go on holiday, not to go caravaning - life has to simple. ..

What I do at home is irrelevant, apologies for suggesting you turn the pump off, leave it on and enjoy the wall to wall fitted water.
