Bessacarr Oven - Lit It Once But Now It Doesn't Work - Opinions Please

Recommended Posts

Hi all

I recently bought the trailer listed in my profile information, a Bessacarr Cameo. I'm quite fond of it so far. However, some things just aren't going my way and I don't doubt it's some silly omission on my part causing the problem.

I recently installed a brand new, full gas bottle. The regulator is fitted correctly and in the 'on' position. I know the gas works because I recently lit the pilot light for hot water, knowing that if that didn't work I would be up a proverbial creek in terms of repair capability. .. and all was well.

It's the oven that doesn't work. I know to light the hob first, to draw gas into the system. The correct little red tap/valve is in the 'open' position, and the hob and grill light first time every time. The first time I did this I then lit the oven and all was well. But since then it has refused to work, a significant hindrance as you can imagine.

I was told to turn on the gas (as described above, no problems there), light the hob, then turn the oven dial to gas mark 9, push it in, and light. I'm using a long lighter because the electric ignition is broken. But it just won't light anymore. I can't hear any gas getting to it either. It annoys me that I did it once but now can't do it again!

Please can you share your suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Are you sure the glass lid to the hob is fully open? There is a safety cut out for the gas if this lid is not fully open.

Check all the isolator switches are in the on position, normally found grouped together in a cupboard

Ten to one on for the lid being down.

3 to one the gas switch is off

5 to one it needs the gas turning on

12 to one it needs a service

5 to 1 - the oven knob must be kept pressed down while lighting the gas in the oven and also afterwards until the thermocouple has heated up otherwise it will cut the gas off.

I am very sorry but betting on what is wrong with any gas appliance is sheer lunacy and something that should not be entertained, especially when advocated by people who have no qualification to make such ridiculous posts, and even worse by a so called moderator, who should know better.

If you do not understand gas, let someone who does take care of it, after all, it is only your life you are potentially putting at risk.

Check the spindle part of the knob is tight, the thermocouple relies on a good connection.

I doubt if the van has been seviced recently, if at all.

Get a mobile Caravan engineer to give it a service.

The last mobile caravan engineer that serviced my caravan drilled the jet out on the grill so it burned better.

Could still be air in the pipe before the gas pilot will ignite .

You should be able to hear a hiss when the knob is pushed in and then as said you need to keep it pushed in for ten seconds usually when lit .

I appreciate the sentiment of your post but was this vitriol really necessary? Starting your post with "I'm sorry but "doesn't make it any better.

Shirl250 sums it up nicely - Oh dear!

I took it that WispMan assumed the OP would take Brecons advice and was making a bet as what the engineer would discover. I don't think it was advice to do anything unsafe or irresponsible, just a little jest.

Okay, firstly I would like to thank everyone who weighed in.

Brecon, I am sure you didn't mean to come off as rude or abrasive.

I'd love to know why you're so sure my caravan hasn't been serviced - short of you being psychic I'm lost there. In fact it has been serviced, and recently.

I forgot to mention I had ruled out the lid-up issue too; it's not that.

I do now, however, know what it is. Turns out the hob and oven work on separate gas intake valves, and the oven won't light unless the hob gas supply is cut off.

All is now working.

Like I said I appreciate all the helpful suggestions folks, thank you.

I don't understand why the gas supply to the hob should have to be switched off to make your oven work?

Nor I.

There are usually two separate valves on the gas line for hob and cooker, along with one for the boiler and one for the fridge. They are all either on or off but aren't interdependent. I would suggest JT turns both hob and cooker valve to the 'on' position and both should work fine in tandem.

Indeed that doesn't make sense if I understand it right. Is it just that the oven ignitor doesn't work if the hob is on? What if you use a match to light it? Or can't you boil vegetables while heating something in the oven?

Very strange.

What a shame some members cannot distinguish between a comment from a member with the same right to an opinion as the rest of us but who happens to be a moderator, and a comment made in their official capacity as a moderator.

Give the guy a break, he is member just like you and me. Oh and there is no need to belittle him with the "so called" prefix, being a moderator has nothing to do with the topic or an individual's opinion  Grrrrr.

Back to the original post. Could it be that the oven thermostat has failed, so is not maintaining the gas supply once lit?

Hmm, perhaps this requires further investigation. In the name of science. And as you all rightly point out, cooking two things at once!

I noted during an early attempt that, when I turned on the correct (oven) valve, the hob gas went out. This despite the gas bottle being full. But the only way to be certain is to replicate the same conditions and see if I get the same result.

Stan, I think the thermostat is okay; the oven now stays on, and at my desired gas mark, for as long as I need. But thank you for your helpful suggestion all the same.

I've just moved off a narrowboat where I did most of the cooking on a log burning stove or a halogen oven, so I will admit I can be a bit clueless about this sort of thing. Hopefully after a few summers in my caravan I will be able to be as helpful as all of you.

It's just a long shot, but I do remember having a bulkhead regulator being a bit clogged with oil and would only supply enough gas for one burner at a time.

Sorry if that isn't the case here.
