Awning Rail Opening (new)

Need to form a new opening in the rail. Last time I did the job I used a bolster and a hammer. Now with a newer van I am looking for a more professional way. My research found this tool.

Looks nice and easy, does any one want to buy shares in one?

Has anyone got any other suggestions? My brother has done his using a bullet type of spreading tool.

Fast, but it's the best part of a day to get there and back.

That e-bay tool is just meant for using when the awning channel has been dinged . .. you hammer it along the channel. I don't think it's meant for making a new opening.

The Bailey-type tool a bit cheaper here!

Thanks, still silly money for a simple tool, recon a pair of welders grips/sheet metal clamps might do the job better.

What do you think?

I've got a few sets of these in the toolchest, the jaws are about 3 inches long but at that price you could cut the jaws down to the 1-1. 5 inches you'll need.

Pity your dealer is so far away - mine took minutes to do whilst I waited. My Lunar had no openings in the bottom rails for awning skirt, nor the full rail. Had one each end put in at around shoulder height.

Was warned that the paint can crack but mine hasn't.

Job was done by placing a piece of cloth over the rail section, introducing the "bolster" thingy and simply prising it open by hand. Looked really easy.

Only warning from my experience (cracked paint apart) is not to open too wide. Just enough for the awning to slide or if over stretched the awning will pull out of the slot and jam as you feed it.

Edit. Just looked at the links you gave and I'm not convinced either are the right ones to use. , Certainly the second is not. (The Bailey took is a joke - I guess the diamonds set along the handle bumps up the price!)

All that was used on mine by dealer was a simple bolster chisel. You would get the job done using any piece of flat sturdy steel the correct width I think. Just protect with cloth, insert and lever!

I've seen a dealer do it with a bit of hardwood and a hammer and another with 2 steel strips clamped in mole grips.

I made a tool by grinding a slot in a piece of steel.
