Tow Car Advice Required

Hi all,

Looking for some inspiration - I take delivery of a new Swift Challenger 645 in a few weeks and although I have a Hyundai Santa Fe, I would ideally like something a little smaller - what tow cars could you recommend to tow 1640kg, does not have to be an SUV, I've had ML's Touareg's and a few Santa Fe's, but I'd really either like a car or a smaller SUV

Thanks

To pull 1640kg ?

Not much I would imagine !

Smaller SUV's are, well, smaller (and erm lighter)

Are you hung up on 85% of this, or 100% of that?

5 Series Touring or GT, A6 Allroad, lighter caravan ?

As above!

Many new models are lighter than their outgoing version anyway - so I think any SUV or car smaller than Santa Fe will be that much lighter - but only the OP can say what minimum kerbweight is acceptable to tow his 1640 kg.

Ford Mondeo estate used to have a towing limit of 2000kgs. Now it's 1800 kgs ( like the Kuga ) Maybe a large Volvo estate ?

How about a cabby? Obviously depends on whether or not you've enough grey hair to join the club but they can actually be quite practical and good fun, it's like having 2 cars.

My A4 is rated to 1800kg and towed the van (1800kg MAM) easily, the A5 is either 1900 or 2000kg I think. Decent sized boot as well.

For SUV I'd go MK1 Q5/ SQ5, I like Audis BTW :D

Running a new mondeo hatchback with a twin axle van at 1750kg. Over 100% ratio but tows really nicely.

I wouldn't want to tow that particular van with anything much smaller than the Sante Fe

I tow 1800kg with our seat Alhambra (kerbeweight of 1845kg) with no issues. Towing is circa 25mpg and solo it's anything up to 50mpg.

Not looked back since we swapped from the Touareg to the anodyne people carrier

Our 2013 Mk2 Kuga has a towing limit of 2100kg, have they reduced that on the new version?.

Honda CR-V?

We've recently purchased a twin axle Sprite dealer special which weighs 1610Kg. I tow with a 2008 ctdi CR-V, and it pulled it to Cornwall and back recently, a lot easier and less stressful than I thought it would.

However, reviews for towing with the new 1. 6 version are mixed, so your best bet would probably be the last of the 2. 2 idtec engines which sold until 2014.

Awaiting build of 150 bhp diesel Alhambra it's got everything electric sliding doors sunroof leather upholstery keyless blah blah blah.

Looked at the Toureg-not a lot-or any-extras for the Alhambra price-an up front 5 month wait and a well developed reputation for tow electric problems.

Looked at the Ford Galaxy-it looks the same bland machine I had six years ago-no development!

But of course uber reliable-unlike my present and past Picasso Grands-love the technology though-thank goodness all my cars are on Motability lease.

Mine is a 180hp auto and it definitely is no slouch. Also 5k less than a sharan, with more toys than you can shake a stick at. Reversing camera mode allows me to pinpoint the towball over the van exactly and that saves a lot of hassle in our household!!

Ok, it's not going to set the trend setters alight with style and fashion etc, but if the OP wants something to do a job, then the alibaba is difficult to fault

The OP hasn't mentioned price limit?

Anyway I tow a 1700kg Swift (upgraded from 1636kg, I'm around 30kg over that.) with my Mazda CX-5 kerb is 1703kg.

I can recommended it, even with two bikes on the rear rack.

A new model CX-5 is out about now which has increased kerbweight of around 40kg, its already won a group test, and I expect it to be another winner. My model also won a 2015 group tow test, so its officially a good tow car.

But you do have to go for the top model to get a kerbweight over 1700kg.

Mines a auto rated at 2000kg tow limit, only negative is the 88kg nose weight limit. But I tow at 85kg with no issues. Last caravan I towed was 1565kg, towed for 3 years with a cx-5.

Thanks All,

Did a bit of surfing the Jag XF may be a contender as is the Ford S Max, I must look at the CRV too :-)

I'm with extrailman, CX5 is exceptional. My van is a small 2 berth but I have pulled much heavier with it and had no problems.

A couple of cars ago, previous one was a Santa Fe which I didn't care for, we had a VW Tiguan, the escape model. I believe the towing limit was somewhere around 2000 kg way over the kerbweight. We were towing a Compass omega 1540 MTPLM no issues at all. It was fantastic towcar, even at 140 bhp. I'm not sure what the new Tiguan is rated at but it must be worth a look.

Ford Edge looks nice (are they available in the UK?), it has a max Tow capacity of 2000 Kg @ 12% incline and a max noseweight of 90 Kg. The 180 ps manual version has a kerbweight of 1912 Kg and the 210 ps automatic has a kerbweight of 1949 Kg

https://www. ford. co. uk/cars/edge

Certainly looks the business, I think it might struggle with my 2000 Kg Tabbert, the noseweight limit of only 90 Kg puts me off a bit, my Shogun has a 140 Kg limit.

I've been towing with an S-Max since 2009. The 150ps was more than adequate but the 180ps is even better.

Might be tempted for a Kuga nex but I do like my S-Max

Another +1 for the Mazda CX5. I am only towing 1100kg with it but it is a superb car all round. A lot less body roll than most small SUVs, lots of toys in the Sport Nav which is the one i have, the 2. 2d engine is fantastic and the auto box is one of the best i have driven (and i was in the motor trade working in a Jaguar dealer so i drove all the Jags plus all sorts of other top end cars)
