Hopefully it will act as a reminder to others who may be tempted to do the same. Two caravans have been seized by police after coming to officers' attention as they were driven up Sutton Bank. Caravans are prohibited from going up or down that part of the A170, between Thirsk and Helmsley, due to its steep gradient and hairpin bend. An alternative route is clearly signposted through Coxwold and Ampleforth. Sutton Bank At 10am on Monday June 5, officers stopped two caravans which had travelled up the bank. It then emerged that neither driver had the correct licence to tow the caravans anyway. Both drivers were reported for driving other than in accordance with their licences, and the caravans were seized by police - until someone with a suitable licence can come and retrieve them. What about the appropriate prosecutions that should by-rights - follow ? They will probably plea that they cannot read and then get sent to Adult Education Classes and progress through to a Law Degree at the tax payers expense. A short-while carrying out essential checks can ensure a long-time of happy & safe caravanning for all concerned. Ignorance can often be bliss but is certainly not an excuse and when continually disregarded they can be totally disastrous for oneself and the innocent parties. They only live in their caravans if they have purchased them and have receipts to prove provenance,if they haven't and or can't then they are not their caravans but belong to someone else. If you take away their caravans they are entitled to their human rights as they are their homes and they would then qualify for housing . They know the law I bet . Indeed, in the past I used to regularly pull a friends caravan with the works transit when we did trade shows. The warning signs relate to HGVs, which got stuck 74 times, but does not state what year. No mention of caravans using it. But believe me, this is a piece of cake to what we did in the 1980s. There were four of us adults in a 1300cc Peugeot 305 and pulling a luggage trailer which had all our camping gear (that's when we had a frame tent). We were driving to Yugoslavia (Lake Bled area), and took the wrong turn in Austria, and drove over the Julian Alps. We ended up driving up a road with lots and lots and lots and lots of hairpin bends, with a rock face on one side (thankfully our side) and on the other, no railings to stop anyone coming the other way from going over the edge. All we could manage to see down below was a haze as we climbed higher and higher. It was the only time that I didn't take any photos (I was at that point not wanting to breathe in case it took us over the edge - the road was fairly narrow). My OH, who was doing the driving, was running out of gears, it was mainly first gear all the way up. My sister-in-law in the back had her head buried in her knees all the way. There was even thought that we'd have to get out and walk. Anyway, we did make it, whew, and still think its a pity not to have taken any photos, but I will not go there again. Caravans are banned because of one particular hairpin bend which can easily catch them out. Its not only the gradient that's the problem its also the hairpin bend halfway up, the weather also plays its part in making it particularly tricky at certain times of the year. Easy T Posted June 6, 2017 Share Posted June 6, 2017 I deliberately stopped my X-Trail on a 1 in 4 and restarted with some front tyre scrabble and a little sawing of the wheel. A little under 1500kg on the hitch. Would I wish to drive up Sutton Bank? No ta. When I stopped I knew that I could make the climb without stopping but as the road was reasonably wide and not much traffic, good visibility for and aft I thought that I would find out if a restart was possible.
