Powrtouch Classic Rubber Boots

Went to give the 'van a wash in storage at the weekend and found half of the rubber boot from the front of the nearside mover lying on the ground below it. It appears to have simply perished and fallen off. The one on the other side is going the same way. Went to my local dealer to see about replacements and was told they were out because there had been a high demand for them. Now my mover is only two years old and my van is mainly seasonal so doesn't get towed very far, probably only covered about 1000 miles since the mover was fitted. Not impressed by the longevity of these boots.

I've ordered two replacements from Powrtouch but at £10 a piece not exactly cheap if I'm going to have to replace them every two years.

I've checked them carefully and there's no sign of damage or rodent teeth marks, just clean splits.

Anyone else had this? Is there a problem with them or am I expecting too much from them?

I have replaced mine once in 12 years, so not exactly going to break the bank.

Maybe someone swapped them for their old perished ones.

Seems daft, but I have had my breakaway cable replaced by a broken one while in storage.

They do not seem to last long that long. I renewed mine about 2 years ago. And yes, they are expensive!

If mover only 2 years old they should be covered under warranty. I had one go on my previous caravan (was a 2009 Powrtouch mover - pre Evolution) and PT posted me 4 x new ones foc under their warranty terms.

I swapped mine last year but they were about 10 years old. I needed to clean up the spade connectors on the motors and the boots looked past it, so I ordered a pair from powrtouch and swapped the set when I did the job I gave them a spray with silicon lubricant once they were fitted as a protective coating.

I had mine changed at 3 yr old under warranty. When you fit the new ones, put a cable tie round the outside, taking care not to interfere with the electrical connections. If they spit, they won't drop off and expose the terminals.

My first thought was that someone had swapped them, but the dirt on the one which is still in situ looks totally undisturbed, so I don't think this was the case.

Thanks to the others for the trips about silicon spray and cable ties.

I might give PT a call.

I bought a Powrtouch mover in 2004 and fitted it myself. After three or four years I noticed the rubber boots were beginning to disintegrate and Powrtouch sent me some free replacements. I'm surprised that by now they are not fitting rubber of a better quality. It would be possible. The driveshaft boots on my twenty year old car are still sound.

I didn't realize that there was a boot. Looking at the Powrtouch web site I note that they sell something that looks like a collar that goes around the motor which I think I have noticed and being a 2008 it is not in good condition. Are they difficult to fit? I notice that the price is £10, but an extra £60 to have it fitted. This collar I suppose gives some protection to the motor, but what I would like to see is a boot that covers the front of the assembly including the electric actuator. On the off side I have just had fitted the third actuator and I'm sure part of the problem is water getting in, Number 2 failed due to a small fibre gear wheel loosing a few teeth, and number three recently because the actuator gears were grinding and sticking at times.
