Cant Find The Caravan Identifying Number For CRiS On Windows.

Hi All.

We are new to caravaning and have just bought our first, a Swift Charisma 555 07. A real do-er-uppa. It doesnt have any paperwork, but naturally we want to register it with CRiS. I have looked all around the windows for an identifying number that we were told is where we would find the number needed by CRiS, and could not find it.

Can someone please help us with further info on how/where to find an identifying number so we can proceed with registering and insuring?

Hi J & B, and :welcome:

The CRiS number on the windows looks like the one on this page . .. if there's one there, you really can't miss it.

If there's none on the windows it may never have been registered (it's not compulsory) - or all the windows have been changed.

Otherwise, you'll have to take out a new registration using the VIN number of the caravan to be found on the A-frame or chassis or a plate by the bottom of the door.

Normally, it is in the right hand side bottom of window . It is a dot matrix design.

Have you tried insuring with out a chris number, perhaps you just have a chassis number usually found on the chassis A frame.

Ps insurance is an option, not compulsory.

Cheers. A totally noob question, but where on the underside is the A frame? (Everyone feel free to laugh) ?

You should have a plate next to the door with the CRiS number on it. It doesn't matter if it's been registered or not they come out of the factory with numbers on the windows and plate.

The A frame is the area up front on the chassis (that connects to the car)

If it is on the A-frame it will be riveted on either behind the head or on one side, most usually the nearside. It should be clearly visible without having to remove any faring.

If its a 2007 Swift then the Vin Nº is STAMPED into the chassis leg and can be viewed through a cut out in the A frame cover.

Have you bought two caravans, you just asked a similar question about a Hobby ‘van?

No idea how Germany does it, but in UK all numbers on chassis and windows match. If they don’t then alarm bells should be ringing.

My opinion is worth exactly what you paid for it.;)

I don't think Fendt are a member of the NCC who organise the vin scheme and therefore it will not have a vin number.  This can be the position with several European made models. The caravan can be added if you contact CRiS. The scheme applies to caravan built from 1992 onwards, so older models will not have one, but you can still get one from them.

Slightly misleading WW. The VIN numbering system is international and not administered by the NCC. However the NCC do run the CRIS system, which is unique to the UK and uses the VIN number to ID a van. All UK built vans are  automatically registered with CRIS and their first owners logged via the selling dealer  After that the system can fall apart if subsequent owners don't bother trying to register.

The VIN no. is unique to one particular caravan, so windows with another VIN showing are replacements sourced from another caravan

The van's VIN number, along with Type Approval code, MTPLM, axle and hitch weight limits should be on an exterior plate/decal, normally by the door. It should be easily visible for enforcement officers to see. If it has been removed/painted over you might need legal advice as to whether the van can be towed.

I've got nothing to do on this hot afternoon

but to settle down and write you a line.
