Jiffy176
Looking at getting some limpets and the cutting tool for my 2016 Rally Pro 330. Couple of questions. Can anyone with a 2017 Kampa confirm if the limpet holes are just that, holes in the fabric or do they have an eyelet surrounding them? Are the limpets any good and would they replace the rear upright poles? Thanks. Edited February 18, 2017 by Jiffy176
Seaman
Hi Jiffy, There are only holes with no surround. The Limpets part with the thread would not be long enough. Did you notice the RRP for them £37 is a bit steep, my local dealer is charging £19. 99. I have taken a series of images so you can see - http://www. caravantalk. co. uk/community/gallery/album/1877-kampa-limpets/ David Edited February 18, 2017 by Seaman Quote мы приходим невидимый - HM Submarines Conqueror, Churchill, Renown, Onslaught, Ocelot, Porpoise
SamD
I've bought a set and the punch and, although not yet used in anger, I think they are well designed. Don't think there is any need to reinforce the holes cos: The limpet can be left in situ when the awning is stored so there is not the need to keep removing the central 'screw' from the hole. Any 'pull' on the material will be on that material on the perimeter of the limpet given that the internal basket pulls the material inside the limpet. The other advantage for me is that my 400 covers one of my windows and I will be able to use 2 limpets there to eliminate any movement (scratching) Quote Sam Range Rover Sport - Auto Sleepers Kensington
Jiffy176
Thanks both useful. Yes £37 is somewhat steep and I wouldn't pay that. I've seen them online for a Fiver for the punch and £20 for the suckers. I'm only really interested if it would allow me to do away with the rear poles that although I have used them every time I'm not convinced they do much apart from add 2 kg to my payload.
Seaman
Jiffy, I have the rear poles, but have not had the chance to try the awning yet. I am going to wait before getting the Limpets, so I can gauge if they will needed. I bought the wheel arch cover and was quite impressed with the Limpets. The poles are much worse quality than the earlier versions
Seaman
MM, I didn't get the Kampa rear poles, but another brand, I don't recall which. The dealer suggested them as they are black and would blend in with the awning material. I haven't even taken them out of the packaging yet, so have no idea what clamping it has? Can anyone confirm if you can get away without the poles if using limpets? Keep those! I gave mine with my old awning. Wish I'd kept them. ...new ones are like being on the beach. Personally, I'd recommend still using the poles, as you never know when a storm is going to hit. ...
IanV8
Never had the poles but bought a set of limpets at the Glasgow show £19. 00. Not used them yet but also bought the wheel arch cover and tried it on the van and the limpets at great but the cover partially blocks the fridge vent so some surgery required. Don't think you need the punch as a leather punch will do the job. Ian 1 Quote 2018 Range Rover Sport AB, 2022 Buccaneer Cruiser registered in 2023. Seaman
I reckon you could get a shoe repairers like Timpson to punch the holes for a quid or two? Saves buying the Kampa hole cutter. Jiffy176
To be honest the punch looks like one of the single hole punches for paper we have at work, as long as it is 8mm then it should be fine. I've got one of those things to put holes in belts but I'm damned if I can find it. I found one place online that sold the cutter for a fiver which isn't bad. Milky thanks for the heads up, I thought the old ones were a load of kak, what's wrong with the new ones does the clamp slip? I thought they looked OK all being one piece. Interestingly I got a new second hand rapid 220 poled, first check in the garden and the clamping arm on both poles snapped as they couldn't take the force required to close the clamp. Luckily a pair of Isabella thumb screw clamps fitted the poles so that's what will be used. Does anyone test this stuff before they sell it? Fireman Iain
I'd never heard of these limpets before this thread. They look an excellent idea. But we haven't got a Kampala. Next time we've got our Outdoor Revolution out, I'll be giving it a good dose of looking at to see if they can be fitted to that.

The Limpet has an internal basket which, as the external cover is tightened on the screw, pulls both the material and the centre of the suction cup inwards, creating a partial vacuum. I think this design intentionally gives it the ability to stay in one position to counter the effects of wind. The ordinary suction cups can easily retain their 'stick' but move sideways on a smooth surface. 1 Quote Sam Range Rover Sport - Auto Sleepers Kensington

Screwing right pulls the suction pad out, this then creates a vacuum and it doesn't move In over 1000 miles.
Seaman
I am very impressed with the design of the Limpets and think they are going to be a big success for Kampa. Just testing them on my patio door, I really tugged at them and they do not move. I tried them dry, not sure if they need spit? My rear pad pole is made by Outdoor Revolution (Charcoal Grey) and has a flip lever locking mechanism, which when tested earlier seems strong enough to last. Seaman
Geoff, I think the guy is inside the awning, although it appears he is outside. The awning is on a display frame, which gives the allusion of it being the other way round.
