Hi all, been a member for a few years now but never posted.

My query is that i was diagnosed with severe heart failure last year ( in my case sounds worse than it is ). I tow a caravan and want to tow down to spain, have driven a few times in a motorhome pre diagnosis.

I would be interested to hear from anyone in a similar position regarding travel insurance, cost and exclusions etc. Thanks.

If you are in the CC, talk to their 'Red Pennant' foreign insurance! They seem to cover just about everything.

Please tell how you retained your license? Blond has a defibulator fitted and is having a heck of a job getting her license renewed. She never has had a heart attack as such.

Isn't that a bigger risk than heart failure in terms of possible blackout issues?

I was wondering why you haven't checked the the Dvla website before making such an inane comment. ..

Having had two "episodes" as a result of aschemic heart disease, I have survived ( yes it's me typing) and carried on caravanning. When I speak to health insurers about pre existing conditions all they usually want to know is what medication I'm on. I haven't found it all that difficult or expensive to to get insurance and now aged 72. I think you need to identify the precise medical description of your condition and medication, because it is quite important to be precise.

If you contact the Caravan Club about insurance cover the medical screening department will want details of your condition and treatments. I have had to deal with them for several years both for myself and my late wife and have always found them to be fair and helpful. In the event of a claim being made, the Club will contact your doctor and request a copy of your medical history, so keep to the facts of your condition in answering their questions -- not that I'm suggesting you would not do so!...

I had an Aortic Valve Replacement in 2013, initially Red Pennant would not insure me but recommended Makesure Insurance that would, however, they would only insure me for 31 days, I offered to pay a premium but it was a take it or leave it scenario, so I took it, I had to change Tunnel and other bookings but we had a great holiday despite that. the following year, I applied again with RP and they accepted me with a 45 day Multi Package. You will have to provide either with you Treatment and Medication and then they will pass you onto their Medical Screening people who will either approve or reject. I hope you get cover, but at the end of the day it is YOU that matters not Insurance cover for a holiday. Good Luck

Les

Hi all, thanks for your comments.

Tin_Snail is correct, if you look on the dvla website it tells you that you do not need to inform then if you have heart failure, heart attack, bypass, angioplasty, heart valve disease or angina. You do though if you have had a pacemaker or defibrilator fitted.

I checked with dvla when they first thought it was angina then again when it changed to severe heart failure.

It is always down to the individual on how they feel, i feel as fit as i ever did regarding my heart condition and would be the first to admit if i wasnt up to driving.

The guidance the Dvla provide (for health professionals) is for anybody interested here.

There are of course more stringent requirements for hgv and bus drivers but having had cause to look into this for somebody recently I was quite surprised at the range of cardiac related conditions that do not require the Dvla to be informed.

I have had two episodes of heart problems, angina and three stents, then a couple of years later a minor heart attack and three more stents, I was concerned about travel insurance. I have a paid for bank account that includes travel insurance, on informing them they have accepted my condition without any extra premium. I have looked at other providers but they either won't insure me or have large premiums. My account cots £11 a month and includes mobile phone cover for both our phones and gadget insurance for laptops etc, so I don't think its too bad.

I was told that I didn't have to notify DVLA when I had my pacemaker fitted although they said not to drive for a couple of weeks. However when I had my cataracts removed from both eyes - not at the same time - I did have to notify them and apparently they are guided in their decision making by your own doctor.

. Several weeks after the second eye procedure I mentioned to my doctor that I was getting anxious about not having heard from DVLA. Doctor's reply was not to worry, you'll soon hear that your license has been restored.
