Caravan Number Plate For New Car - No V5 Yet

Hello all,

We have just bought a new car and don't have a V5 for it yet. I went to buy a number plate for our caravan today with paper work for the new car but was told I needed the V5 for a number plate, we don't have the V5 yet.

Is there any other way of getting a plate without a V5. ..legally.

I never bother because the ID regulations are too perverse for those of us without photo-id (legally) so I just order a "show plate" off the internet sticking to legal font & spacing - quicker usually. It doesn't give any issues as I'm not trying to hide anything.

Too late now - but you could/should have asked the dealer to supply an additional rear plate as part of the deal.

The pair I have on my car were bought mail order from Drive Motor Spares. They didn't require any paper work and the plates have the BS authority on them together with the suppliers name.

This is what I have done in the past too. The regulations that are supposed to prevent somebody obtaining a plate without paperwork and ID are a bit of a joke. I think the only weakness doing it like this is that the supplier will not always include their post code on the plate which is supposed to be on plates if they are deemed to completely meet the relevant British Standard.

They are normally 'legal' in all other respects though.

I have just made a 'temporary' one using my printer and some wide sellotape to laminate it (badly). It should do the job I will order one from Amazon. As other said I should have got the dealer to make one, I never thought at the time. ..

Take the number plate off the rear of the car and use that as long as you put it back on when you are not towing .

Odd, I have only a few minutes ago ordered a plate for our van, I ordered online from Plate Creator, a company that I have dealt with many times, normally the plate arrives the following day, but as it's still a holiday period it may take a little longer, no postage to pay, great prices, they also offer bits and bobs for applying plate to vehicle, no faffing about with V5, driving licence, domestic bills etc. They are classified as "Show plates" but I cannot see why, I am having mine done in 3D and a Euro Plate with an all up cost of £15 delivered, from memory I paid £10 per plate for a normal Euro Plate, so £20 for front and rear

As others have said, give the dealer a ring and ask him/her to supply an extra number plate.

Exactly what we do. Could you not go back to the car dealer and say you forgot you needed a second rear plate. Am sure they will oblige for you

The reason they are 'show plates' is because 3D does not comply with the regulations!

Just a thought though. ..does the Euro bit come with a sticer to cover it post Brexit?

3D does indeed comply with the regulations, so sorry that is not correct.

I've had "not entirely legal" - non standard spacing and our own names instead of supplier and post code, for years. Only been pulled up on MoT. When did you last have a caravan MoT'd?

I always get my caravan plate from the car seller and have not paid for 1 of them.

I would have it plain as EU plates will be obsolete and we will require a GB sticker soon in EU as not a member .

That may theoretically be true, but as they are solely for use when driving IN the EU, they would surely only be obsolete when driving here (when they're not required anyway), or other countries not in the EU, so may still be OK to use.

Driving in other countries outside the union you are legally require a GB sticker we can only use the Euro plates as a member in the union countries .

We would need to comply as a non member .

The EU numberplate country ID is a concession within the EU, for EU countries - otherwise the international convention applies - so when we leave, that concession will end unless it's dealt with as part of the negotiated settlement.

I've never had an EU, or other country id, on my number plates - a stick-on GB "plate" is still legal.

TBH I think in the big scheme of things the issue of a tiny blue flag with stars on number plates should be the least of our worries. ...

Indeed - this is what we did for the first time in yonks this year. I forgot to spec. Euro plates on the car so just stuck a CC club GB plate on the boot. (The caravan has a Euro plate).

Its a whole 'non issue' really.

If a supplier is selling 'road legal' plates without seeing the relevant documents then he is breaking the law. Are you therefore guilty of aiding and abetting for buying them? After all, if you didn't buy them he wouldn't break the law by selling them.
