Garmin 52lm Signal Problem

On replacing my tug, I have been using the onboard sat nav but it's a bit out of date with no option on updates! I was given a Garmin 52LM and it seemed to lock on to satellite ok at home but when I tried to use it in the car it had loads of problems. .... and unable to acquire satellites and then when acquired the arrow wandering off the programmed route . ..then losing signal.

I wondered if it was the presence of my on board sat nav. ..so I switched that off. No better. If I hung the Garmin out of the window it seemed to find satellites quicker. ..it seemed to at least. But once inside it did the same wandering and loss of signal.

Could it be my heated windscreen interfering with it? Or is it defective? Or is this model prone to misbehaviour?

Any experience or thoughts?

Some can be affected by heated screens - have you tried updating the unit software? An update could reconfigure the receivers and improve it's sensitivity and tracking algorithms.

I have the Garmin 660 LMT-D camper. .. If I'm slight;y moving after setting it, it can take ages to find a signal. Tnen 9 out of 10 cases sends you on a goose chase. ..

As far as I know.

I plugged it in to Garmin Express and did all the offered updates. I will however double check. Thanks.

Ok that's reassuring, thanks

Some years ago some Renaults and Citroens had a solar/heat reflective glass fitted, and several cases of satnavs not being able to lock on to gps signal.

Maybe nothing but worth a check.

The way to get over this was to fit an external antenna if you satnav can be fitted with one.

why don't you contact Garmin and ask if they have an explanation or a solution?

It is on my list to speak to them, but I have been toying with buying a better spec model and wondered if this models behaviour was recognised by other Garmin users first.
