robertm
Can't believe what's happened to us last night. We are staying on a site in the new forest and its quite busy due to the new forest show. Without being too derogatory let's just say many of the site occupants are quite unsavoury. Anyway, opened the door of the van this morning g only to be greeted by a really strong gas smell. Eventually I found the culprit. During the night someone had decided to help themselves to my cadac by cutting through the pipe and pushing the open end back into our awning. This pumped a continuous supply if gas until I discovered it. Luckily none of us smoke or I dread to think of the consequences. Quote RegardsRobertFord Kuga 150 TDCI Titanium. shipbroker
As someone who has lost a 'van due to leaking pipe to Cadac I can sympathise with the situation and hope you don't have any long term problems. ..assume you will be moving on? geoff Quote Kia Sorento KX-1 CRDI 4WD towing an Elddis Affinity
robertm
As it happens the show ends today and most if not all of the occupants in question have moved on themselves. mayblossom
We use to camp in the forest sites years ago and never had any problems but have heard of a few problems lately so sad when you can't leave anything out without some scumbag thinking they can have what they like! Did you tell the police?
Ern
From the Description given I assume that there was a continuous supply of gas, meaning that the gas supply had not been turned off after use by the operator? This doesn't mitigate the crime of course. Some years ago we camped in a Forestry site and people nearby had their gas bottle stolen, as it was which was a free standing next to the 'van. They realised when the 'van went cold at 10 in the evening. The same night, our next door neighbour had his Tilly lamp stolen too. The suspects were a small group of people living (the site manager said they were squatting) in a nearby cottage. 1 Quote Ern
mayblossom
Although the forest sites are lovely there's no way to stop undesirables just walking onto the site and taking what they want
hp100425ev
I don't condone the theft for one minute, but it certainly isn't good practise to leave a BBQ connected to the gas after use. Presumably the gas supply must also have been left turned on, unless the thief deliberately turned it on?

robertm
I know I should have turned the gas off. It's the Bailey push and turn to connect. There is no tap to switch off supply. I've never thought about disconnecting it every time after use to be honest, in the same way I wouldn't shut off the gas supply to the cooker inside the van after use. Think I will do in future though (after I renew my cadac). 2 Quote RegardsRobertFord Kuga 150 TDCI Titanium. Bailey Pegasus II Verona

milkymarsh
That's shocking. Hope all ok, but one for definitely reporting to the authorities. If you have one of those bullfinch connectors, then the only way to turn it off is to disconnect. We have a BBQ point externally, but isolate it every time we finish cooking (more for safety instead of the potential of someone pinching the BBQ). What have the site said to you? robertm
Yes, it's one of those connectors you have to physically disconnect. Will be doing it in future. The wardens just advised to let the police know and get a crime number. Will do no good though as I'm not about to claim for it. They also told us if another incident the same as ours last night, in our field. Not a cadac but a gas BBQ of some sort Quote RegardsRobertFord Kuga 150 TDCI Titanium. PandR
What a nasty thing to do. We keep our portable Weber "bike chained" to the van but aren't always rigorous in turning off the gas. Mind you, after many years of caravanning across UK and Europe the only incident we had was at Chatsworth CC Site during the show weekend. Someone helped themselves to our solar lights. Mind, there were lots of less desirable "itinerants" wandering around the site day and night. .. Quote Spanish Trip 2020 - - Time to bailout... I agree that it needs to be reported to see if there is a trend in the area. If people do not report then the government brags that crime has been reduced and then cuts back the number of bobbies patrolling and we all lose.
CommanderDave
These shows draw the opportunist of no fixed address shall we say . The Great Dorset Steam Fair usually is the same with all the locals reporting crimes and usually a few caravans and motorhomes will disappear from the show campsites . A couple of years ago a load of equipment like the power cabling disappeared for the show worth 100k . I have stayed on sites you had to chain up aqua rolls and take out the pump overnight and chain sat dish to the steadies and leave nothing in the awning of any value usually commercial. I usually turn my Cadac off and put it just inside the awning door . jetA1
"Please please report similar crimes" . ............... "Every theft not reported plays straight into the criminals hand." Aonther reason to report is that the one crime might be one of many. If everyone were to take the view that it's not worth reporting then who's to say that there weren't many of those crimes committed indicating a trend in activity rather than it just being an isolated incident. Sad to say that there might not much reaction to a single incident but if the police are made aware of several incients there might be more incentive (more justification) to ivestigate.
