Smell From Truma Combi

I'm getting a smell of hot electrics from my Truma Combi?. On our Vision, when the water temperature is set to 60 degrees, in about 10 to 15 minutes we experience a smell of hot electrics ( or maybe ozone) in the van. The smell seems to be coming from the long cover near the top of the unit. I have raised this with Truma who say they are aware of this happening but assure me it is not a problem and is not dangerous.

I'm interested to hear if anyone else has experienced this.

Hi Tony,

I have had this smell in our Vision too in the past. Usually it has been when we have the water heating set to 60 degrees and the space heating on at the same time. I think from memory it was when we had the double electric element active. Over time it has diminished.

Can I ask if you have had tried the heating or water to come on with the timer? We get an error code with a failed activation. But everything works fine when manually set on. My dealer has allegedly sorted it out, but the fault still raises it's ugly head.

We get this in our Sterling. According the Swift group forum it is a common problem but not usually serious enough to be worth trying to fix.

We arrived on site today and got the same smell when heating the water up initially. Our van is 3 years old and we're used to it now.

We get it in our Sterling too.

The Van is nearly 6 months old and we only get it on hot water setting. When we first got the caravan, we got it when the the heating was switched on at all.

If my 2016 Bailey Pegasus has the same unit it also gives off a smell usually as the hot water temp symbol stops flashing, spoke to Truma at the Nec in Feb and they said it was normal, I will say it's not get any worse and you smell it all around the van, if any one can update on a solution to stop the smell please post, Ancona

We get it in our motorhome. Its usually when the heating is cut off by the thermostat when the temperature is reached and the blown air goes off. It seems to be a problem on electric rather than gas but then the gas does seem to have a blown air exhaust which might.

Hi Seaman,

I seem to remember that we have used the timer once and it worked OK.

Hi Seaman,

Thanks Tony,

I had a massive amount of vibration caused by the unbalanced wheels. The shaking was so bad it caused the wardrobe to loosen from the wall fixings. That was sorted out at the last service. Truma control panel is mounted on the wardrobe, so it's possible the shaking has given it's brain a severe shaking?

Use ours on gas mostly as we rally. Not noticed a smell but if there was I'd probably of put it dowm to being new as we only got it in February. The heating timer works perfectly everytime.

Hi there

We had this and resolved it by setting the timer temperature to 3 degs lower than the manual setting. Made a mistake the other day and increased the timer without doing anything else and the error came up as though overheating. Always adjust the temperature outwith the timer on period as it seems to revert to manual. Hope this helps

I will try that Deryck, anything is worth a try, thanks

We have had 2 random error codes E255 which is a connection error. the other E89 combustion air motor according to Truma CS. As we have do not use the heater on gas, the E89 error is an odd one. So my theory of the control panel not liking it's brain being shaken, may be correct?

I'm relieved to read the above postings. I've had the same smell, similarly only when on full power. I was thinking maybe it emanates from the plastic hot air outlet as it isn't detectable under the seat closer to the boiler unit. Plastic does make a pong when it gets very hot.
