Help with combination weights please

Recommended Posts

Can anyone help with our combination weight pass. Its got my head in bits!!

My details are:

Car

Kerb weight 1445

Gross weight 1890

Max tow weight 1400

Train weight 3290

Now this is where my problem starts.

My caravan is a 2003 Compass Rallye GTE 490/4L but i cant find any details on this spec of van!

I can't check the plate because im no where near my caravan!

Thanks people!

The 2001 has a MIRO of 1106kgs but you really need to find the MTPLM of the van - tis on the plate and you have to go and find out. CT's caravan reviews does not include your model. It could be a bit close, methinks - but tis only a hunch!

Apologies - in CT's caravan specs it shows the 2001 as being 1350 kgs MTPLM.

And your max tow weight is 1400kgs.

Unless otherwise stated all posts are my personal opinion

Where did you find that. I couldn't find my van listed.

According to the CC's matching website the Rallye GTE 490/4L was last made in 2000MY, there's nothing for that model in 2003. However as it may be that the model was introduced in 2000 and ran for several years at the same spec. I'll quote the weights which are MIRO 1030kg and MTPLM 1340kg.

The only possible problem might be if the MTPLM has been upgraded by an owner and that will only be checkable via the plate if there's nothing in the paperwork.

As it stands your van, loaded to its limit is within the towing limit of the car and if both are loaded to their limits it will be within the Gross Train Weight.

A fully loaded van will be at 93% of the car's kerbweight, a bit over the 85% ratio recommended for inexperienced towing drivers.

Thanks very much for taking the time to reply in such detail. I am not inexperienced at towing. I towed for years when i was young. Only now i actually care that I'm legal ha ha.

Ill check the plate when i get a chance as im away worth work at the moment.

Thanks again

If you've got that and the car figures you quoted, what else is it you're after?

Is it legal? Is it a good combo?

Your MTPLM is below your towing limit, and the GTW is below 3500Kg, so, provided you load within the limits you are legal whenever you took your driving test.

As to whether it is a good match, there is nothing to suggest that it is a bad match. Some folk are very picky about the 85% thing, but there is very little, if any, evidence to show that it actually matters!

Great news. Thanks Stevan. Good to know. We're not really interested in changing our car at the moment as we like it.

It's legal - and as you've towed before it's an OK match - as long as it's carefully loaded as above with attention paid to getting the noseweight optimised - find out what the maximum noseweight is for your car and aim to get the caravan just under that.

I assume you say this based on the fact the maximum caravan nose weight exceeds that of the car, or are you advocating ignoring caravan maximum nose weight and only working on the cars S value? IMHO you need to get as close to lower of the two. For example if the car is 125KG and the caravan is 100KG then you should be aiming for just below the 100KG mark.

You're right, of course, but from the car's weights it's not a 4x4 truck and therefore it's virtually certain it's noseweight limit will be under 100kg.

The year your caravan was manufactured will be etched into the vin number on the windows, see the link to CRiS explained on the forum http://www. caravantalk. co. uk/caravan-finance/buying/CRiS-explained

Its not just the cars nose weight you should look at its also the towbars maximum weight

This will be when first registered and isn't a problem but if you want the relevant information for your caravan check the Elddis brochure archive, incidentally as far as I'm aware 2001 was the last year of the 75 kg hitch weight and the last year your caravan was made, from 2002 Elddis used the 100kg hitch weight.

Its important that you use the correct information for the caravan for things like tyre size and pressure, yours should be 195/70R14 95 and 42 pressure. The following year they reduced the profile and increased the pressure.
