Without seeing the van I would say it's much more likely that the wheel arch liners have warped owing to poor fitting or poor manufacture, or possibly the wrong tyres have been fitted at some stage. It's unlikely that you've damaged the axle in a driving incident without knowing about it; they are substantial bits of metal.

Wouldn't this be covered by the warranty, might only be for the 1st 3 years though. I would contact Alko themselves & see what they say. Might contribute towards your costs.

Sounds like a faulty batch of axle rubbers I'd still pursue Alko for an explanation when they repair it.

Hi We have a similar problem our caravan a Bailey Unicorn Virgo is only 2 months old and the wheel arch liner has split letting in water. This has been caused by the wheel rubbing on the liner as the gap is too small. It would appear the axle has dropped and AL-KO arrived today and are going to carry out an investigation. The wheel in question is on the offside where the kitchen units, cooker, microwave and water heater are positioned.

I had a similar issue with my Indiana this year and decided to get it sorted before heading to Croatia in June. I took the axle out and had it delivered to Al-ko UK. They did whatever needed to be done as they said they couldn't let it out of the factory without everything being 100%. Got a call about three weeks later to say it was ready for collection. They had re-bushed it on both sides, opened up the hubs and inspected the drums, bearings and breaks (everything was in perfect working order). Their customer service was excellent and I couldn't recommend them more. Their bill for all of this was £88!! I organised getting the axle from Ireland to the UK myself.

We have a 12 month old Bailey pursuit 560/5.

We have been away twice in it . . On our third trip we got to destination to find the tyre very close to the wheel arch . .

On our return straight to the dealership, to complain. . The caravan was collected the following day to get sorted. . We didn't even have time to clear it out.

Well we was told 10 days later that the axle had to be sent to Al-ko to be tested as they summised we had over loaded or hit a pot hole. . Well what was in the caravan is still in it. . And far from over loaded,. And as far as aware we had not hit any pot hole. ( seams to me pot holes are blamed for everything)

Well long story cut short. . Some 5 week later we are told that this is the reason .

As I told the MD of our caravan supplier. . If he had bought a 20k car and this happened he would be screaming it wasn't road worthy and certainly not fit for purpose. .

Still fighting to get it sorted.

Any advise appreciated

Mine is still lower on the nearside, i did measure the difference earlier in the year. .... it was a fair difference, 24mm rings a bell !

It hasnt touched the new arch liner since its been replaced, but it does worry me.

I was told 10mm was acceptable difference.

Mine was checked and was 15mm out but was apparently okay as it was the kitchen side.

If I looked at the arch liner it was actually convex while the other side was flat. A common problem on the Orions I believe.

Simply not fit for purpose.

Potholes are a fact of life. Even if true, how could anyone prove it had been overloaded?

It isn't, apparently you need to measure from the axle plate to the floor on a level surface.

I was really worried but the workshop were unconcerned and were sure it was the liner.

I loved the Orion, it was a troublesome lemon though!

Indeed, having gone through the small claims court for a smaller issue the law is on your side for a new caravan that can't stand a simple pot hole!

It isn't like they are rare!

I have said not fit for purpose already. ..

Not road worthy also

We was far from overloaded my husband ex farmer been towing for 40 year. .

Crazy what they will do to wriggle out of it, but we cannot disprove what they are saying?

The arch liner on mine was out of shape. .. that didnt help.

but it still has a huge amount more weight on the NS than the OS, you only have to look at the tyre sidewall to see that.

You don't have to disprove it, the onus is on them to prove the fault occurred after sale as it occurred within 6 months.

Our axle collapsed after the van was only 2 months old. Initially they said we must have hit a pot hole. The Al-Ko engineer examined the wheel and tyre and confirmed this was not the case as there was no sign of damage. The axle was removed and sent to the factory where it was discovered the rubber was faulty. All the work was covered on warranty.

And they can't prove what they are saying. Also logic, public expectations, are on your side.

I was once given some excellent legal advice. Keep your argument simple, to the point, factual. Do not pontificate.

Hello everyone,

Have a Bailey unicorn Vigo, and yes we have just had to have a new axle fitted, £940 inc labour. Only had it 16months. We were told by the dealer it's been overloaded, this is our third bailey and we have never had this issue, the side were the the cooker, microwave, gas bottles and water system is, had no clearance hardly above the tyre, having had the new axle fitted I have noticed that that same side as less of a gap than the door side, and the van is empty.

The farther in law Also has a Vigo and it looks like he has got the same issue and Carrys little in the van, it looks like his may have dropped on the same side. It's in for its first service at the beginning of November, so let's see. Looks like a bad design on the unicorns, having the gas bottles over the axle, cooker, microwave and water and heating system.
